Loop
“Wander through sunlit dunes, tranquil lakes, and whispering forests where wildlife and history quietly intertwine.”
Begin your journey at the entrance to the Kennemerduinen, a gateway easily accessed from the nearby city of Haarlem. The trailhead is close to the Kennemerduinen Visitor Centre, which is well-signposted and serves as a hub for public transport connections—buses from Haarlem Central Station stop nearby, and there’s ample parking for those arriving by car.
Trail Overview and Navigation
Covering approximately 11 km (about 6.8 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, this loop is ideal for hikers seeking a leisurely walk through the diverse landscapes of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. The terrain is predominantly flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels and suitable for families. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints to keep you confidently on track.
Oosterplas: Coastal Dunes and Tranquil Waters
Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach Oosterplas, a serene dune lake surrounded by sandy banks and low grasses. This area is a favorite for birdwatchers, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species stop to rest. The clear waters and open vistas offer excellent opportunities for photography and quiet reflection.
Vogelmeer: Birdlife and Wetlands
Continuing westward, the trail brings you to Vogelmeer around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark. This shallow lake is a haven for waterfowl, including grebes, herons, and sometimes even spoonbills. Wooden observation platforms allow for unobtrusive wildlife viewing. The surrounding reed beds and marshes are alive with the calls of birds, making this section particularly rewarding for nature enthusiasts.
Hezenberg: Dune Forests and Open Heath
As you loop south and then east, the landscape transitions into mixed dune forests and open heathland near Hezenberg. Here, you’ll walk beneath twisted oak and pine trees, with sandy paths winding through patches of heather and wildflowers. Look out for grazing Highland cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the biodiversity of the dunes. The absence of significant elevation means the walking remains gentle throughout.
Historical and Natural Significance
The region’s dunes have protected the Dutch hinterland from the North Sea for centuries, and the area is steeped in history. During World War II, parts of the park were fortified as part of the Atlantic Wall, and remnants of bunkers can still be found hidden among the dunes. The park’s unique ecosystem supports rare plants and animals, some of which are found nowhere else in the Netherlands.
Getting There and Practical Tips
From Haarlem Central Station, take bus 81 towards Zandvoort and alight at the “Kennemerduinen” stop. If driving, set your navigation to the Kennemerduinen Visitor Centre, Duin en Kruidbergweg 74, 2071 LE Santpoort-Noord. Facilities at the visitor center include restrooms, a café, and information boards. Dogs are allowed on most sections of the trail but must be kept on a leash due to the presence of wildlife.
Expect sandy paths, occasional muddy patches after rain, and exposed sections with little shade—bring sun protection and plenty of water. The loop is well-marked, but using HiiKER will ensure you don’t miss any key points of interest along the way.
