Loop
“Golden dunes, tranquil lakes, and woodland whispers await on this scenic circuit through nature and history.”
Starting from the edge of Overveen, just west of Haarlem and easily accessible by train from Amsterdam Centraal (about 25 minutes to Overveen station), the Meertje van Burdel and Middenduin Loop offers a gentle 9 km (5.6 miles) circuit with approximately 100 metres (328 feet) of elevation gain. The trailhead is a short walk from Overveen station, and for those arriving by car, parking is available at the Middenduin entrance on Duinlustweg.
Getting Oriented and Early Highlights
The route begins at the entrance to the Middenduin nature reserve, a gateway to the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Early on, the path meanders through open dune grasslands and scattered groves of oak and pine. The sandy trails are well-marked, but using HiiKER for navigation ensures you stay on the correct loop, especially where smaller paths branch off.
Meertje van Burdel and Dune Landscapes
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail skirts the tranquil Meertje van Burdel, a small dune lake surrounded by reeds and willow thickets. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for herons, grebes, and sometimes even kingfishers. The lake’s calm waters reflect the shifting sky, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers.
Continuing west, the path undulates gently, with short climbs and descents typical of the Dutch coastal dunes. The highest point, around 4 km (2.5 miles) in, offers sweeping views over the undulating dunes and, on clear days, glimpses of the North Sea in the distance. The sandy soil supports a unique mix of flora, including wild orchids in spring and summer, and the rare sand lizard may be spotted basking on sunny days.
Middenduin Woodlands and Historical Context
The loop then enters the Middenduin woodland, a former estate landscape shaped in the 19th century. Remnants of old carriage paths and stately beech avenues hint at its aristocratic past. The area was once part of the Duinlust estate, and you may notice the remains of ornamental ponds and garden structures. During World War II, these dunes were part of the Atlantic Wall defenses, and subtle traces of bunkers and fortifications can still be found hidden among the trees.
Wildlife and Conservation
Deer, foxes, and rabbits are common throughout the reserve, and the area is managed to encourage biodiversity. Grazing Highland cattle and Konik horses help maintain the open character of the dunes, so be prepared to encounter these gentle animals along the way. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash in most sections to protect wildlife.
Final Stretch and Practical Tips
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) wind back through mixed woodland and open meadows, with benches placed at scenic viewpoints. The sandy paths can be soft after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. There are no refreshment points directly on the loop, but cafés and shops are available in Overveen village, just a short walk from the trail’s end.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER to ensure you stay on track, especially in areas where trails intersect. The entire loop is suitable for families and those new to hiking, with gentle gradients and well-maintained paths. Public toilets are available at the main entrance, and the area is accessible year-round, though spring and early summer offer the richest displays of wildflowers and bird activity.
