Loop
“Wander wide sandy tracks from quiet dune-lake hush to big-sky grasslands and breezy Zandvoort edges.”
This easy, mostly level 17 km (10.6 mi) loop is a classic “dunes + dune-lake + seaside town” day in Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland and the edges of Zandvoort. Expect wide sandy tracks, firm gravel paths through pine and mixed woodland, open dune grasslands with big skies, and a few short, soft-sand stretches that can feel slower than the distance suggests. Total elevation gain is effectively ~0 m / ~0 ft (you’ll still roll gently up and down low dunes, but nothing sustained).
Nearest clear start landmark/address (trailhead area): the most practical start for this loop is by Visitor Center De Kennemerduinen, Zeeweg 12, 2051 EC Overveen (Netherlands)—right at Entrance Koevlak for the park. This is also the closest major landmark to ’t Wed (the dune lake) and is a common access point for longer circuits. 1.0–4.0 km (0.6–2.5 mi): ’t Wed → open dune country Leaving the lake, the loop typically strings together dune valleys and open grassland. Look for classic coastal plants like sea buckthorn (often bright with berries in season) and tough dune grasses that stabilize the sand. If you’re hiking on a warm day, this is where you’ll feel the sun most—there’s less shade and the pale sand reflects light.
4.0–9.0 km (2.5–5.6 mi): Hazenwei / Hazenberg area (views + “young dunes”) The names in your hike—Hazenwei and the nearby Hazenberg viewpoint area—are associated with routes that pass young sea dunes, flower-rich grasslands, and viewpoints over the shifting dune landscape, with distant sightlines toward Overveen, Zandvoort, and the North Sea. Even though your loop is longer than the short marked circuits here, this section is the scenic heart: broad dune bowls, wind-shaped ridges, and frequent “stop-and-look” panoramas. 9.0–13.5 km (5.6–8.4 mi): Transition toward Zandvoort As you arc toward Zandvoort, the landscape gradually shifts from quieter interior dunes to busier edges—more walkers, runners, and (in places) wider multi-use tracks. If your loop touches the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes boundary areas or WWII-era remnants, you may encounter bunkers tied to the
