Loop
“Wander through grand avenues, lush woodland, and dreamy ponds in Haarlem’s enchanting Elswout estate loop.”
Starting from the picturesque entrance of Landgoed Elswout, just outside Haarlem and easily accessible from the Elswoutlaan entrance, this 12 km (7.5 mile) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently reached by taking a train to Haarlem station, then a short bus ride or cycle to the estate, or by car with parking available at the main Elswout car park.
Elswout Estate and De Kleine Vijver
The route begins by weaving through the historic Elswout estate, a 17th-century country park renowned for its grand avenues, romantic bridges, and ornate follies. Early on, you’ll pass De Kleine Vijver, a tranquil pond surrounded by ancient beech and oak trees. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for herons, kingfishers, and the occasional woodpecker. The estate’s landscape architecture, with its winding paths and decorative bridges, reflects the Dutch Golden Age’s fascination with English landscape gardens.
Kerklaan and Duinvliet: Woodland and Dune Landscapes
Continuing west, the trail follows Kerklaan, a leafy lane lined with stately trees and glimpses of historic villas. After about 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll enter the Duinvliet section, where the landscape transitions to a mix of woodland and open dune. This area is part of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park buffer zone, known for its sandy soils and unique flora such as wild orchids and dune roses in late spring and early summer. Roe deer and foxes are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk, and the air is filled with birdsong from nightingales and warblers.
Navigation and Points of Interest
Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and clear signage throughout the estate and surrounding woodlands. For those wanting extra reassurance, the entire loop is mapped on HiiKER, which provides GPS guidance and up-to-date trail conditions. Notable landmarks along the way include the ornate Orangery, the 19th-century coach house, and several whimsical garden pavilions. The route also skirts the edge of the Duinvliet estate, where you can catch glimpses of the historic manor house through the trees.
Practical Information
The loop is almost entirely flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it accessible for families and those seeking a leisurely walk. The paths are mostly gravel or packed earth, suitable for walking year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain. Benches and picnic spots are scattered throughout, especially near the ponds and open meadows.
Public transport users can reach the start by taking bus 81 from Haarlem station to the Elswoutlaan stop, a short walk from the estate entrance. Cyclists will find ample bike parking at the main gate. For drivers, the Elswout car park is located at Elswoutlaan 22, Overveen.
This loop offers a blend of history, nature, and tranquility, making it a rewarding day out in one of North Holland’s most beautiful and storied landscapes.
