Loop
“Wander through blooming heaths, ancient forests, and peaceful glades for a day rich in colour and history.”
Nestled in the heart of the Veluwe region, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop hike offers a gentle, flat route with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all experience levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Otterlo, a well-known gateway to the Veluwe, and is easily accessible by both car and public transport. If arriving by train, the nearest major station is Ede-Wageningen; from there, regular buses connect to Otterlo, dropping you within walking distance of the trail’s start. For drivers, parking is available near the entrance to the Roekelse Bos, close to the intersection of Apeldoornseweg and Mosselseweg.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop weaves through three distinct landscapes: the open heathlands of Valenberg, the ancient woodlands of Pranken Wambuis, and the tranquil Roekelse Bos. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and intersections. For those seeking extra reassurance, the entire route is mapped on HiiKER, which provides detailed GPS navigation and offline maps.
Heathlands and Wildlife
Setting out from Otterlo, the first section leads you into the Valenberg heath, a sweeping expanse of purple heather in late summer and home to grazing sheep and Highland cattle. The open terrain offers wide views and a chance to spot birds of prey such as buzzards and kestrels. At roughly 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll notice the landscape transition as you approach the edge of the Pranken Wambuis forest.
Woodlands and Historical Significance
The Pranken Wambuis is a mosaic of pine, oak, and beech trees, some centuries old. This area has a rich history, once serving as royal hunting grounds and later as a strategic hideout during World War II. Keep an eye out for old boundary stones and remnants of wartime shelters hidden among the trees. The forest is also a haven for wildlife—deer, wild boar, and foxes are commonly seen, especially in the quieter morning hours.
Roekelse Bos and Return
At around 8 km (5 miles), the trail enters the Roekelse Bos, a quieter, denser woodland with soft, sandy paths underfoot. This section is particularly peaceful, with the scent of pine needles and the sound of woodpeckers echoing through the trees. Occasional clearings reveal carpets of moss and, in spring, wildflowers. The loop gradually curves back toward Otterlo, passing several picnic spots and benches perfect for a rest.
Preparation and Essentials
Given the flat terrain and well-maintained paths, standard hiking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is recommended after rain. There are no significant climbs, and the route is suitable for families and casual walkers. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the way. Mobile coverage is generally good, but downloading the route on HiiKER ensures you stay on track even in the denser forest sections.
The Veluwe’s unique blend of heath, woodland, and history makes this loop a rewarding day out, with plenty to discover in every season.
