Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of woodland, wildlife, and history at the heart of De Hoge Veluwe.”
Starting from the vicinity of Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, a striking hunting lodge designed by the renowned architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trail lies within the heart of De Hoge Veluwe National Park, one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated natural reserves, known for its diverse landscapes and rich history.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, head to Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, located at Apeldoornseweg 258, 7351 TA Hoenderloo, Netherlands. By public transport, take a train to Apeldoorn or Ede-Wageningen, then connect via bus to the park’s main entrance. From there, you can use the park’s free white bicycles or walk to the lodge. If arriving by car, parking is available at the park entrances, with a short drive or cycle to the starting point.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop begins near the iconic Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, a landmark set beside a tranquil lake. The route is well-marked and easy to follow, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints.
Landscapes and Nature
The trail meanders through the Pampeise Bossen, a serene woodland area characterized by tall pines, ancient oaks, and open heathland. In spring and summer, the forest floor is dotted with wildflowers, while autumn brings a tapestry of golden leaves. The landscape is flat, with an elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it suitable for families and casual walkers.
Wildlife and Points of Interest
Keep an eye out for red deer, wild boar, and mouflon, which roam freely in the park. Birdwatchers may spot woodpeckers, buzzards, and the occasional kingfisher near the water’s edge. The trail passes close to De Koekoek, a quiet area known for its birdlife and peaceful atmosphere.
Midway through the loop, you’ll return to the vicinity of Jachthuis Sint Hubertus. This early 20th-century lodge is not only an architectural gem but also steeped in history, having served as a retreat for the Kröller-Müller family, founders of the nearby Kröller-Müller Museum. Guided tours of the lodge are available if you wish to explore its art deco interiors and learn more about its past.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
Paths are mostly wide, well-maintained, and suitable for all weather conditions, though sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections may be muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, perfect for a rest or snack break.
Facilities and Accessibility
Restrooms and a café can be found at Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, and additional facilities are available at the park entrances. The trail is open year-round, but check the park’s website for seasonal opening hours and entrance fees.
