Loop
“Wander from Otterlo’s cozy village charm into peaceful pine forests and blooming purple heathlands.”
Starting from the edge of Otterlo, a charming village nestled at the gateway to the Veluwe, this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the entrance to Bungalowpark Hoenderloo, just off Apeldoornseweg, which is easily reached by car with ample parking available. For those using public transport, buses from Ede-Wageningen or Arnhem central stations stop at Otterlo Centrum, a short walk from the starting point.
Through the Village and Into the Forest
The route begins by skirting the edge of Otterlo, where you’ll pass traditional Dutch homes and local bakeries—perfect for picking up a snack before you set out. Heading north, the path quickly transitions from village streets to sandy forest tracks as you enter the Roekelse Bos, a tranquil woodland known for its tall Scots pines and occasional stands of birch and oak. The forest is home to deer, foxes, and a variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers and nuthatches, so keep your eyes and ears open.
Bungalow Parks and Open Heath
After about 4 km (2.5 miles), the trail weaves past several bungalow parks, a hallmark of the Veluwe region’s holiday culture. These clusters of holiday homes are surrounded by woodland and open heath, offering glimpses of the region’s sandy soils and resilient heather. In late summer, the heathland bursts into purple bloom, attracting bees and butterflies. The area is also dotted with small ponds, which can be lively with frogs and dragonflies in spring and summer.
Roekelse Bos: Nature and History
At the heart of the loop, around the 8 km (5 mile) mark, you’ll be deep in the Roekelse Bos. This forest has a rich history, once part of royal hunting grounds and later managed for timber. Today, it’s a peaceful retreat, with wide, sandy paths and occasional wooden benches for a rest. Look for remnants of old boundary stones and the occasional WWII-era foxhole, silent reminders of the area’s strategic importance during the war.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for peace of mind, especially as some junctions can be confusing where smaller trails intersect. The terrain is mostly sandy or packed earth, with occasional muddy patches after rain, but no significant climbs or descents. Sturdy walking shoes are sufficient; boots are only necessary in wet weather.
Returning to Otterlo
The final stretch brings you back toward Otterlo, passing through a mix of open fields and forest edges. The village itself is worth exploring, with its small museums and cafes. The Kröller-Müller Museum, famous for its Van Gogh collection, is just a short bike ride away if you have time to extend your visit.
This loop is ideal for a relaxed day out, suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking to experience the quiet beauty of the Veluwe without strenuous climbs.
