“A meditative Brabantse Wal traverse through pines, heath, drifting sands, vennen, and old forts.”
This is a long, low-relief traverse (about 102 km / 63 mi with roughly 100 m / 330 ft of total ascent) across the Brabantse Wal—a distinctive “edge” landscape where higher sandy ground drops toward lower clay polders. Expect a steady rhythm of pine and mixed woodland, heath, drift-sand ridges (“duinen”), vennen (small lakes/ponds), and historic waterline fortifications, with lots of fast, easy walking on sandy forest tracks and well-used paths, plus occasional short, softer sand sections that slow the pace. The terrain is rarely steep, but it can be deceptively tiring because sand and long straight forest lanes add up over distance.
For planning and navigation, load the full line on HiiKER and keep an eye on the many intersecting local path networks—easy terrain, but plenty of junctions.
- By car: Aim for Huijbergen village center (good services) or the signed access points for the surrounding nature areas. A commonly used reference point for the Huijbergen area is around Staartsestraat (Huijbergen), which is used as a location marker for the Staartse Heide access. ([vvvbrabantsewal.nl](https://www.vvvbrabantsewal.nl/locaties/1898143542/de-staartse-heide?utm_source=openai)) - By public transport: The region is served by buses connecting to larger rail hubs (often via Bergen op Zoom). From there, local buses typically reach Hoogerheide and Huijbergen. If you want, share your intended start time/day and I can help you sanity-check a workable transit approach (without guessing timetables).
If you’re instead planning to begin at the fort section, the most straightforward car start is the official parking for Fort de Roovere at Ligneweg, 4661 PM Halsteren. ([fortderoovere.com](https://fortderoovere.com/?utm_source=openai))
A realistic pacing model for many hikers is 20–30 km (12–19 mi) per day depending on sand, breaks, and daylight—so many people treat this as a 3–5 day outing.
