Loop
“Wander through peaceful woodlands and blooming heath, where nature’s stories and history gently entwine.”
Starting from the edge of Sint Anthonis, a small village in North Brabant, the Peelven and Sint Anthonisbos Loop offers a gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Sint Anthonisbos forest entrance, close to the intersection of Bosweg and Brink, which is easily reached by car with parking available nearby. For those using public transport, buses from Boxmeer or Venray stop at Sint Anthonis, from where it’s a short walk to the forest entrance.
Woodland and Heathland Landscapes
The route quickly immerses you in the tranquil Sint Anthonisbos, a mixed woodland known for its tall pines, ancient oaks, and lush undergrowth. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and ferns, and in spring, wildflowers add bursts of color. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path opens onto the Peelven, a serene heathland area dotted with small ponds and wetlands. These vennen, or fens, are remnants of the region’s peat-cutting history and provide habitat for frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl.
Wildlife and Natural Highlights
Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and the occasional badger, especially in the quieter stretches of the forest. Birdwatchers will appreciate the presence of woodpeckers, nuthatches, and buzzards circling overhead. The heathland sections are particularly vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms in purple hues.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The Sint Anthonisbos area has a rich history, with traces of prehistoric settlements and evidence of medieval peat extraction. Along the loop, you’ll pass several information boards detailing the region’s transformation from wild peat bogs to cultivated woodland. Near the halfway point, around 5 km (3.1 miles), you’ll encounter a restored peat worker’s hut, offering insight into the tough lives of those who shaped the landscape centuries ago.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The loop is well-marked with local signage, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any seasonal detours or updates. The terrain is mostly flat and consists of sandy paths, forest tracks, and occasional boardwalks over wetter areas. Waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain, as some sections can become muddy.
Facilities and Refreshments
There are benches and picnic spots scattered throughout the forest, particularly near the larger ponds. Sint Anthonis village, just a short detour from the trail, offers cafés and small shops for refreshments before or after your hike. Public toilets are available at the main forest entrance.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a peaceful walk through varied landscapes, with plenty of opportunities to observe local wildlife and learn about the area’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
