Polder Landscape and Waterways

The route traverses the open fields of Cupido's Polder, where you'll encounter a network of drainage ditches and canals essential for water management in this low-lying region. The flat terrain offers unobstructed views of the horizon, with the occasional windmill punctuating the skyline. These windmills, some dating back to the 17th century, are integral to the area's history of land reclamation.

Flora and Fauna

The meadows along the trail are rich in biodiversity. In spring and early summer, the fields bloom with wildflowers, attracting a variety of pollinators. Bird enthusiasts can spot species such as lapwings, godwits, and herons. The waterways are home to ducks, swans, and the occasional otter.

Historical Significance

The region's history is deeply intertwined with the Dutch struggle against water. The polders were reclaimed from marshlands through an intricate system of dikes and drainage channels, a testament to Dutch engineering prowess. Along the route, you'll pass by historic farmhouses and barns, some of which have stood for centuries, reflecting the area's agricultural heritage.
