Loop
“Amid ancient oaks and purple heather, this tranquil loop unveils Doorwerth’s storied landscapes and castle views.”
Starting from the outskirts of Doorwerth, this 8 km (about 5 miles) circular route weaves through the tranquil woodlands and open fields of the Veluwezoom region, with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near Kasteel Doorwerth, a well-known medieval castle, which serves as both a historical landmark and a practical navigation point.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take the train to Arnhem Centraal and transfer to bus 51 or 352 towards Wageningen, alighting at the “Doorwerth, Kasteel” stop. The castle is a short walk from the bus stop and offers ample parking for those arriving by car, with clear signage from the main roads.
Woodland Paths and Open Heath
The route begins by skirting the grounds of Kasteel Doorwerth, where you can catch glimpses of the castle’s towers through the trees. The path quickly leads into the Dorenweertsepad, a serene woodland trail lined with ancient oaks and beech trees. In spring and summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers and ferns, while autumn brings a vibrant display of foliage. Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, including woodpeckers and nuthatches.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail opens onto the Hoog Oorsprong Zilverberg section, where the landscape transitions to open heathland and sandy paths. This area is known for its sweeping views and, on clear days, you can see across the Rhine valley. The heath is dotted with juniper bushes and, in late summer, purple heather blooms across the landscape. This section is particularly peaceful, with the occasional buzzard circling overhead.
Historical and Natural Highlights
The region around Doorwerth is steeped in history. Kasteel Doorwerth itself dates back to the 13th century and has witnessed centuries of conflict and restoration. Along the route, you’ll pass remnants of old estate boundaries and traditional Dutch pollard willows, which were historically used for basket weaving and land management.
At roughly the halfway point, near the Zilverberg, you’ll encounter a small hill that, despite its modest height, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. This area was once part of a larger estate and is named for the silvery sheen of the grasses that grow here in the early morning light.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check for any recent updates or diversions. The paths are mostly wide and firm, suitable for walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. There are a few sandy stretches, especially on the heath, but no significant climbs or descents.
Facilities and Points of Interest
Restrooms and refreshments are available at Kasteel Doorwerth, which also houses a small museum and café. Benches are scattered along the route, particularly at scenic viewpoints. The area is dog-friendly, though dogs should be kept on a leash in the nature reserves.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for a half-day outing, offering a blend of history, nature, and wide-open Dutch landscapes, all within easy reach of Arnhem and the surrounding region.
