Point-to-Point
“Wander through dappled woodlands, riverside vistas, and echoes of history on this ever-changing scenic trail.”
Starting from the scenic Westerbouwing, a well-known viewpoint near Oosterbeek, this 19 km (about 12 miles) route gently undulates through the wooded hills and open meadows of the Veluwezoom, with a total elevation gain of approximately 100 metres (330 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible by public transport: take the train to Oosterbeek station, then a short bus ride or a 20-minute walk brings you to the Westerbouwing area. For those arriving by car, parking is available at Westerbouwing’s main entrance, close to the address Westerbouwing 1, 6862 VV Oosterbeek.
Woodland Trails and Panoramic Views
The first section leads you through the Westerbouwing estate, where mature beech and oak trees line the path and occasional clearings offer sweeping views over the Lower Rhine river. This area is rich in history, having played a significant role during Operation Market Garden in World War II. Plaques and memorials along the way commemorate the fierce battles fought here in September 1944.
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the route descends gently towards the Fonteinatlee, a broad, tree-lined avenue that once formed part of a grand 19th-century landscape park. Here, you’ll notice the transition from dense woodland to more open, pastoral scenery. Keep an eye out for roe deer grazing at dawn and dusk, as well as a variety of woodland birds including nuthatches and woodpeckers.
Fonteinatlee to Bergpad: Shifting Landscapes
Continuing along the Fonteinatlee, the trail passes through a mosaic of meadows and small patches of heathland. In spring and summer, wildflowers such as cowslips and orchids dot the verges, attracting butterflies and bees. The path is mostly flat, with only minor undulations, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities.
At around the halfway point, you’ll reach the Bergpad, a historic ridgeway that traces the edge of the Wageningse Berg. This section offers some of the best views of the hike, with the river valley stretching out below and, on clear days, the distant outlines of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug visible to the west. The Bergpad itself is an ancient route, once used by traders and travelers moving between the Rhine and the higher ground inland.
Approaching Wageningen: Nature and Heritage
As you approach Wageningen, the trail skirts the edge of the Arboretum Belmonte, a renowned botanical garden with collections of rhododendrons and magnolias. If time allows, a short detour through the arboretum is highly recommended, especially in late spring when the flowers are in bloom.
The final stretch descends gently into the historic university town of Wageningen, ending near the city center and the Wageningen bus and train stations, making your return journey straightforward. Wageningen itself is steeped in history, known for the signing of the German surrender in May 1945, which ended World War II in the Netherlands.
Navigation and Preparation
The route is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore optional detours. Surfaces are mostly firm, with occasional muddy patches after rain, so sturdy walking shoes are advised. Water and snacks can be purchased in Oosterbeek or Wageningen, but there are limited facilities along the trail itself.
Expect a leisurely day’s walk through varied landscapes, with plenty of opportunities to pause and appreciate both the natural beauty and the deep historical roots of this unique region.
