Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows, ancient pines, and riverside estates on a serene Ommen loop.”
Starting near the charming village of Ommen in the Dutch province of Overijssel, this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) circular route is a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trail weaves together sections of the Overijssels Havezatenpad and the Vechtdalpad, two of the region’s most scenic long-distance paths, and is best accessed from Ommen’s train station, which is well-connected by regular services from Zwolle and Almelo. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the station and in the village center.
Getting Started and Navigation
The route begins just a short walk from Ommen train station, a convenient landmark for orientation. Hikers can use HiiKER for precise navigation, as the trail occasionally branches onto smaller forest paths and rural lanes. The signage is generally good, but a digital map will help ensure you stay on course, especially at junctions where the Overijssels Havezatenpad and Vechtdalpad overlap or diverge.
Landscape and Natural Highlights
The first few kilometers lead you through the lush floodplains of the Vecht river, a landscape shaped by centuries of seasonal flooding. Expect to see expansive meadows dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, and grazing cattle or sheep. The trail soon enters the Zandbelten, a unique area of sandy ridges and pine woodland, remnants of ancient river dunes. This section is particularly tranquil, with soft forest floors underfoot and the scent of pine in the air.
Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. In the early morning or late afternoon, roe deer are sometimes spotted moving quietly through the trees.
Historic Estates and Bridges
Around the halfway mark, the route passes close to several historic estates, or “havezaten,” which give the Overijssels Havezatenpad its name. These manor houses, some dating back to the 17th century, were once the homes of local nobility. While most are private, their landscaped grounds and stately avenues are visible from the trail, offering a glimpse into the region’s aristocratic past.
Crossing the Laarbrug, a picturesque bridge over the Vecht, you’ll enjoy wide views of the river valley. The bridge itself is a local landmark, and the surrounding area is a popular spot for picnics and birdwatching.
Returning to Ommen
The final stretch follows the Vechtdalpad along the riverbank, with open views across the water and occasional benches for a rest. The path loops back toward Ommen, passing through a mix of farmland and woodland before returning to the village. Ommen itself is worth exploring, with its historic windmill, riverside cafes, and small shops.
Practical Tips
The entire route is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 10 meters (about 30 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed day out. Surfaces are a mix of paved paths, gravel tracks, and sandy forest trails, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Water and snacks should be brought along, as there are limited facilities outside Ommen. Public toilets and cafes are available at the start and end of the hike.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in the more wooded sections. The best time to hike is from April to October, when the landscape is at its most vibrant and the weather is generally mild.
