Point-to-Point
“Meandering from windmills to rivers, this gentle walk weaves Dutch history and countryside calm into every step.”
Starting from the charming town of Ommen, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) route to Dalfsen is a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. Ommen is easily reached by train, with regular services from Zwolle and Almelo, and the trailhead is a short walk from Ommen railway station. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the station and in the town center.
Leaving Ommen and Entering the Countryside
The trail begins near the heart of Ommen, a town known for its historic windmills and riverside setting along the Vecht. Heading south, you quickly leave the bustle behind, following Koesteeg, a quiet rural lane that winds through open farmland and pastures. Early in the hike, keep an eye out for traditional Dutch farmhouses and grazing cattle, a hallmark of the Overijssel countryside.
Vilsterse Weg and the Estate of Vilsteren
After about 6 km (3.7 miles), the route joins Vilsterse Weg, leading you toward the village of Vilsteren. This area is notable for the Vilsteren Estate, a privately owned but accessible landscape of woodlands, meadows, and stately avenues. The estate has roots dating back to the 14th century and is still managed as a traditional Dutch landholding. As you pass through, look for the neo-Gothic St. Willibrordus Church and the Vilsteren windmill, both significant local landmarks. The estate is also home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, so keep your binoculars handy.
Stuwepad and the Vecht River
Continuing along Stuwepad, the trail parallels the meandering Vecht River. This section, roughly 12 km (7.5 miles) into the hike, is especially scenic, with river views, reed beds, and the chance to spot kingfishers, herons, and sometimes otters. The Stuwepad is named for the nearby weir (stuw) at Vilsteren, an important feature for local water management and a good spot for a rest or picnic.
Approaching Dalfsen
The final stretch leads you through more riverside meadows and small patches of woodland before entering Dalfsen. This town is known for its picturesque railway bridge and the historic Rechteren Castle, which, while not directly on the route, is a worthwhile detour if time allows. Dalfsen railway station is conveniently located near the town center, providing easy onward travel by train.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths mean standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is advisable in wet weather. There are several cafes and rest stops in both Ommen and Dalfsen, as well as in Vilsteren, but bring water and snacks for the quieter stretches.
This hike offers a blend of Dutch rural charm, historical estates, and peaceful riverside walking, making it an ideal day out for those seeking an easy, scenic journey through the heart of Overijssel.
