Loop
“Wander through tranquil woods and shimmering ponds where history, wildlife, and nature’s wonders intertwine beautifully.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Oisterwijk, a charming village in North Brabant, the loop trail winds through the heart of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen nature reserve. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen main entrance near Van Tienhovenlaan, or by public transport via Oisterwijk train station, which is about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the start—local buses and a pleasant walk through the village connect you to the reserve.
Navigating the Route
Covering approximately 19 km (11.8 miles) with negligible elevation gain, this easy loop is ideal for hikers of all abilities. The terrain is mostly flat, with well-maintained sandy and forest paths, making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed day out. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track through the intricate network of trails and vennen (ponds).
Highlights and Landmarks
The route meanders past a series of picturesque vennen—Voorste Goorven, Kolkven, Kogelvangersven, and Palingven—each with its own unique character. The first major landmark, Voorste Goorven, appears around 3 km (1.9 miles) into the walk, its tranquil waters often shrouded in morning mist and fringed by reeds and birch trees. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for herons, kingfishers, and the occasional osprey.
Continuing through mixed woodland, the trail reaches Kolkven at about 7 km (4.3 miles). This pond is a haven for dragonflies in summer and is surrounded by ancient oak and pine, remnants of the region’s historic forests. The area was once shaped by peat extraction, which created the mosaic of wetlands and ponds seen today.
At roughly 12 km (7.5 miles), Kogelvangersven comes into view. Its name, meaning “bullet catcher’s pond,” hints at its past as a military training ground in the early 20th century. The open water and surrounding heathland attract a variety of waterfowl and, in spring, the chorus of frogs is unmistakable.
The final major pond, Palingven, is reached around 16 km (10 miles) into the loop. This secluded spot is perfect for a rest, with benches and panoramic views across the water. The surrounding heath supports rare plant species, including sundew and marsh gentian.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the hike, expect to encounter a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The forests are home to roe deer, foxes, and badgers, while the wetlands support a vibrant ecosystem of amphibians and insects. In autumn, the woods are carpeted with mushrooms, and the changing leaves create a spectacular display.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen area has a long history of human influence, from medieval peat cutting to 19th-century forestry projects. The ponds themselves are a legacy of this interaction, now protected as part of a Natura 2000 site for their ecological value. Interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
Practical Tips
Facilities are available at the main entrance, including restrooms and a visitor center with information about the reserve. Several cafes and restaurants in Oisterwijk village offer refreshments before or after your hike. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in most areas to protect wildlife. The flat, sandy paths are generally accessible year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain due to occasional muddy patches.
