“Wander Brabant’s flat, water-laced Oisterwijk woods—fen mirrors, soft springy trails, and rain-fed mud.”
You’re looking at a long, very flat day through one of Brabant’s most water-rich forest landscapes: a chain of fens (vennen), small streams, and springy woodland paths around Oisterwijk. At around 31 km / 19.3 mi with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing, the effort comes less from hills and more from distance, soft ground, and potentially wet sections—especially after rain.
A practical and commonly used start for this 31 km loop is Oisterwijk railway station, at Stationsplein 1, 5061 HG Oisterwijk, Netherlands (right in town, easy logistics). (gps-wijzer.nl)
If you prefer starting from the forest edge with facilities, another excellent “gateway” area is Natuurpoort Groot Speijck / the Oisterwijk Visitor Center area on the edge of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen (popular trailhead with terrace and visitor info), but the station start is the cleanest for public transport. (visitoisterwijk.eu)
By public transport - Take the train to Oisterwijk Station (NS). From the station square you can step straight onto town paths that quickly feed into the woods and fen network. (gps-wijzer.nl)
By car - Navigate to Stationsplein 1, 5061 HG Oisterwijk for central access and straightforward meet-up logistics. If you’d rather park at the nature area itself, aim for the Groot Speijck / visitor center area (a well-known access point for the reserve). (visitoisterwijk.eu)
Expect a constantly changing mix of: - Firm town paths at the beginning/end (useful warm-up and cool-down miles) - Wide forest tracks through planted woodland and mixed forest - Narrow, softer singletrack threading between fens, often with roots and short sandy patches - Fen-edge paths with frequent benches and viewpoints—great for breaks, but also where the ground can turn muddy or waterlogged in wet periods (gps-wijzer.nl)
Because the terrain is flat, it’s easy to start too fast. A steady pace with short, regular stops works well over 31 km / 19.3 mi, especially if the ground is “springy” and energy-sapping.
This area is famous for its dense concentration of fens—often described as having around 80 fens within the reserve. (visitoisterwijk.eu)
You’ll pass a long sequence of waters with different personalities: open reflective pools, reed-fringed edges, and darker, more enclosed woodland ponds. Some of the better-known larger waters in the area include Galgeven (noted as one of the larger fens) and smaller, picturesque fens like Goorven. (infointilburg.com)
Wildlife-wise, fen margins are prime for dragonflies, waterfowl, and other wetland birds; the broader reserve is also known for sightings such as kingfishers and roe deer. (visitoisterwijk.eu)
The fen network is dense, with many intersecting tracks that can look similar—especially in uniform pine sections or when foggy. Load the route in HiiKER and keep an eye on: - frequent junctions near fen clusters - short connectors that rejoin wider tracks (easy to miss if you’re chatting or moving fast) - any wet-weather detours where you may need to choose a parallel, drier track
This landscape isn’t “wild” by accident—it’s been shaped by centuries of use and conservation:
