Loop
“Wander through a living tapestry of woodlands and fens, where water mirrors sky and songbirds serenade.”
Starting from the outskirts of Oisterwijk, a charming village in North Brabant, the trailhead for this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop is easily accessed near the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen nature reserve. The area is well-served by public transport: Oisterwijk train station is a short walk from the reserve, and local buses connect from Tilburg and Eindhoven. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the main entrance to the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen, close to Van Tienhovenlaan.
Woodland and Fenland Landscapes
The route is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The path meanders through a mosaic of ancient woodlands, open heath, and a series of serene fens—shallow lakes formed by glacial activity thousands of years ago. Early on, you’ll pass De Hondsberg, a wooded area known for its towering pines and tranquil atmosphere. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and heather, and in spring, wildflowers add bursts of color.
Kolkven, Voorste Goorven, and Klompven
At around 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail skirts Kolkven, one of the region’s most picturesque fens. The water here is often mirror-still, reflecting the sky and surrounding trees. Birdlife is abundant—look for herons, grebes, and the occasional kingfisher darting across the water. The path continues to Voorste Goorven, another fen bordered by reeds and birch trees. This area is a haven for dragonflies in summer and offers excellent opportunities for quiet observation of waterfowl.
By the halfway point, you’ll reach Klompven, a larger lake with clear views across the water. Benches along the shore provide a perfect spot for a rest or picnic. The surrounding woods are home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. The diversity of habitats along the route means you’ll experience a changing landscape with every kilometer.
Historical and Natural Significance
The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen have a rich history. The fens were formed during the last Ice Age, and the area has been managed as a nature reserve since the early 20th century. The woodlands were once part of extensive estates owned by Dutch nobility, and remnants of old boundary markers can sometimes be spotted along the trail. Conservation efforts have preserved the unique mix of wetland and forest, making this loop a showcase of Brabant’s natural heritage.
Navigation and Facilities
Waymarking is clear throughout, but for detailed navigation and to track your progress, HiiKER offers an up-to-date digital map of the loop. There are several access points to the trail, but the main facilities—including toilets and a visitor center—are located near the Van Tienhovenlaan entrance. Cafés and restaurants can be found in Oisterwijk village, just a short detour from the route.
Expect well-maintained paths, mostly wide and sandy, with occasional boardwalks over wetter sections. The loop is suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of North Brabant’s forests and fens.
