Loop
“Wander through whispering woods and shimmering fens, where wildlife and wildflowers paint each season anew.”
Starting from the edge of Oisterwijk, a charming village in North Brabant, the trailhead is conveniently located near the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen nature reserve. This area is easily accessible by train, with Oisterwijk Station just a short walk from the reserve’s main entrance. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the main visitor lot on Van Tienhovenlaan, adjacent to the reserve.
Getting Oriented and Setting Out
The route covers approximately 13 km (about 8 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. The terrain is predominantly flat, winding through a mosaic of ancient woodlands, tranquil fens, and open heath. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence, the HiiKER app provides detailed mapping and real-time tracking for this trail.
Highlights Along the Trail
*Belvers Ven* Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), the path skirts the serene waters of Belvers Ven. This fen is a haven for birdlife, especially in the early morning when herons and kingfishers are often spotted. The surrounding birch and pine woods are remnants of the region’s historic landscape, shaped by centuries of peat extraction and forestry.
*Voorste Goorven* At around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, the trail reaches Voorste Goorven, one of the most picturesque fens in the reserve. Boardwalks and viewing platforms offer excellent vantage points for observing dragonflies, frogs, and the occasional roe deer grazing at the water’s edge. The area is particularly vibrant in late spring and early summer, when wildflowers blanket the heath.
*Kolkven* Continuing along Bos Weg, the route passes Kolkven at approximately 9 km (5.6 miles). This fen is notable for its mirror-like surface and the ancient oaks that line its banks. The stillness here is occasionally broken by the calls of woodpeckers and the rustle of squirrels in the canopy above.
Nature, Wildlife, and Historical Context
The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen is a protected Natura 2000 site, renowned for its biodiversity. The landscape was shaped during the last Ice Age, with the fens forming in depressions left by retreating glaciers. Over the centuries, the area was managed by local communities for peat, timber, and grazing, leaving a patchwork of habitats that support rare species such as the European tree frog and the nightjar.
Trail Logistics and Preparation
The entire loop is well-marked, with clear signposts at major junctions. Surfaces range from sandy paths to compacted earth, and while the trail is generally dry, waterproof footwear is advisable after heavy rain. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the larger fens.
Refreshments and restrooms are available at the visitor center near the start and finish. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. Cyclists and horseback riders share some sections of the trail, so remain alert at crossings.
For those relying on public transport, regular trains connect Oisterwijk with Tilburg and ’s-Hertogenbosch, and local buses stop near the reserve entrance. The trail is open year-round, but the best wildlife viewing is from April to September. Always check the HiiKER app for up-to-date trail conditions and route information before setting out.
