Loop
“Stroll through aromatic groves and wildflower meadows, where tranquil waters and Highveld vistas await.”
Nestled in the heart of Mpumalanga, South Africa, the Poolshoogte Loop offers a gentle 3 km (about 1.9 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible option for families, beginners, or anyone seeking a relaxed stroll through the region’s scenic landscapes. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Poolshoogte Picnic Site, just off the R540 road, a short drive from the town of Belfast. For those arriving by car, ample parking is available at the picnic site. Public transport options are limited in this rural area, so arranging a taxi from Belfast or Dullstroom is advisable if you’re not driving.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The Poolshoogte Loop meanders through a patchwork of indigenous grasslands and stands of pine, with wide, well-maintained paths that are easy to follow. The route is almost entirely flat, with an elevation change of less than 10 metres (about 33 feet), ensuring a comfortable walk for all fitness levels. Hikers can rely on HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail information, which is especially useful for tracking progress and locating points of interest along the way.
Landmarks and Natural Highlights
Early on, the trail skirts the edge of the Poolshoogte Dam, a tranquil spot often visited by waterfowl and dragonflies. At roughly the 1 km (0.6 mile) mark, you’ll pass through a grove of eucalyptus trees, their aromatic leaves scenting the air. Keep an eye out for the resident vervet monkeys and, in spring, a vibrant display of wildflowers carpeting the grassland.
The halfway point brings you to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the rolling hills of the Highveld, a perfect spot for a rest and some photos. Interpretive signs along the route provide insights into the local flora and fauna, as well as the area’s unique geology.
Historical and Cultural Context
Poolshoogte is steeped in the history of the South African Highveld. The region was once a crossroads for early Voortrekker settlers and indigenous peoples, and remnants of old wagon tracks can sometimes be spotted near the trail. The nearby town of Belfast played a significant role during the Anglo-Boer War, and the landscape still bears subtle traces of this turbulent past.
Wildlife and Safety
Birdwatchers will appreciate the diversity of species, including the striking long-tailed widowbird and the occasional secretary bird striding through the grass. While the trail is safe and well-frequented, it’s wise to carry water, sun protection, and a basic first aid kit. Cell phone reception is generally reliable, but always let someone know your plans before setting out.
The Poolshoogte Loop is a delightful introduction to the natural beauty and quiet history of Mpumalanga’s high country, offering a peaceful escape just a short journey from Belfast.
