“Wander Veluwe’s pines and heather to a hidden WWII refuge—mostly level, quietly demanding.”
This is a long, mostly level Veluwe forest-and-heath circuit of about 23 km (14.3 mi) with essentially 0 m (0 ft) of sustained climbing—more “gentle undulation” over sandy ridges than true elevation gain. It links three standout areas west of Nunspeet and near Vierhouten: the quiet heaths of Hendrik Mouwenveld, the WWII hiding place Het Verscholen Dorp (Pas-op-kamp), and the mixed woodland around Zandenbos.
Most practical start/finish: Bezoekerscentrum Zandenbos / Veluwetransferium Nunspeet, Plesmanlaan 2, 8072 PT Nunspeet (Netherlands)—next to Nunspeet railway station and with ample parking. (fietsnetwerk.nl)
- By train: Take the train to Station Nunspeet; you can walk straight into the Veluwetransferium/Zandenbos area from the station side. (wandel.nl)
- By car: Navigate to Plesmanlaan 2, 8072 PT Nunspeet (Veluwetransferium/visitor centre parking). (fietsnetwerk.nl)
Alternative access point (useful if you want the WWII site earlier/later): the memorial area for Het Verscholen Dorp is reached via Tongerenseweg / Pas-Opweg near Vierhouten (car access is typically from the Vierhouten side). (4en5mei.nl)
Expect a patchwork of firm forest tracks, narrow sandy singletrack, and occasional soft, churned sand where you’ll work harder than the elevation profile suggests. After wet spells, some low spots can be muddy; after dry spells, sand can be loose and energy-sapping. Even with minimal climbing, 23 km (14.3 mi) is a full day for many hikers—plan for steady pacing and short breaks.
Use HiiKER to keep an eye on junction density in the Vierhouterbos sections, where multiple forestry tracks can look similar.
0–5 km (0–3.1 mi): Zandenbos edges and Veluwe “sand-and-pine” landscape
Starting from the Zandenbos/transferium area, you’ll quickly be in classic Veluwe terrain: pine stands, mixed deciduous pockets, and small sand hummocks. This area is known for a rolling forest floor rather than hills—your feet will notice the constant micro-undulation even if your altimeter doesn’t.
5–11 km (3.1–6.8 mi): Toward Hendrik Mouwenveld—quiet heath and deadwood-rich forest
As you angle toward the Vierhouten side, the character becomes calmer and more open in places, with heathland around Hendrik Mouwenveld and adjacent forest where deadwood is often left in place—excellent habitat for fungi and insects, which in turn supports woodland birds. (nunspeet.nu)
What to look for:
- Heath margins: transitions from heather to pine are great for spotting birds moving between cover and open ground.
- Woodpecker activity: deadwood zones often mean more drumming and foraging holes. (nunspeet.nu)
11–15 km (6.8–9.3 mi): Het Verscholen Dorp (Pas-op-kamp)—WWII history in the forest
This is the emotional and historical heart of the loop. **Het Versch
