Loop
“Stroll through dazzling wildflowers, whispering woods, and sunlit dunes on this gentle South Holland loop.”
Starting from the edge of Noordwijkerhout, this 22 km (about 13.7 miles) loop trail offers a flat, easy-going journey through some of the most iconic and scenic landscapes of South Holland, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Oosterduinse Meer, a popular recreational lake just east of Noordwijkerhout, making it accessible for both locals and visitors.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Noordwijkerhout is well-served by buses from Leiden and Haarlem. The nearest bus stop to the trailhead is “Noordwijkerhout, Langelaan,” just a short walk from the Oosterduinse Meer. If driving, parking is available at the Oosterduinse Meer recreational area, which is signposted from the N206 highway.
Oosterduinse Meer and Surroundings
The hike begins by skirting the tranquil Oosterduinse Meer, a favorite spot for swimming and boating in summer. The path here is wide and well-maintained, suitable for all levels of hikers. Early in the morning, you might spot waterfowl such as grebes and coots gliding across the lake’s surface. The area is also known for its reed beds and wildflowers, especially in spring.
Keukenhofbosch: Woodland and History
After about 6 km (3.7 miles), the route enters Keukenhofbosch, a lush woodland adjacent to the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens. While the gardens themselves are fenced and ticketed, the surrounding forest is open to the public and offers a peaceful contrast to the manicured flower beds. This woodland is part of the historic Keukenhof estate, which dates back to the 15th century when it was used as a hunting ground and herb garden for the nearby Teylingen Castle. In spring, the forest floor is carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic, and the air is filled with birdsong from woodpeckers and song thrushes.
Aardbeiebdel: Dunes and Meadows
Continuing west, the trail transitions into the Aardbeiebdel, a unique area of coastal dunes and meadows. This section, roughly 12 km (7.5 miles) into the hike, is characterized by sandy paths winding through low, rolling dunes dotted with wild strawberries—hence the name “Aardbeiebdel.” Look out for rabbits and, if you’re lucky, the occasional roe deer. The open meadows are a haven for butterflies and bees, especially during the summer months.
Navigation and Wayfinding
The entire loop is well-marked, but it’s recommended to use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation, especially as some paths through the dunes can be confusing due to intersecting tracks. HiiKER provides offline maps and real-time GPS tracking, ensuring you stay on course throughout the hike.
Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal Highlights
Throughout the year, the landscape changes dramatically. In spring, the nearby bulb fields burst into color, creating a patchwork of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths visible from several points along the route. Autumn brings golden hues to the woodlands, while winter offers a stark, peaceful beauty with fewer crowds.
Facilities and Refreshments
There are several rest areas and benches along the route, particularly near the Oosterduinse Meer and at the edges of Keukenhofbosch. Cafés and restaurants can be found in Noordwijkerhout and near the entrance to Keukenhof Gardens, making it easy to plan a lunch stop or coffee break.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a leisurely, scenic walk through some of the Netherlands’ most picturesque countryside, with easy access, minimal elevation, and plenty of natural and historical interest along the way.
