Loop
“Stroll through sweeping dunes alive with wildflowers, birdsong, and hidden echoes of coastal history.”
Starting from the edge of Noordwijk, near the Langevelderslag beach entrance, this loop trail covers approximately 8 km (about 5 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available at Langevelderslag (address: Langevelderslag 43, 2204 AH Noordwijk), or by public transport via bus lines from Leiden or Haarlem, stopping at the Langevelderslag bus stop.
Coastal Dunes and Open Heath
The route winds through the expansive dune landscapes of the Langeveld and Boeveld areas, part of the larger Hollandse Duinen National Park. Expect sandy paths bordered by swaying marram grass, low-lying heather, and scattered pine groves. The terrain is flat throughout, with the highest dunes rising gently but never more than a few meters above sea level. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through open heathland, especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms purple.
Wildlife and Flora
Keep an eye out for native wildlife: rabbits and foxes are common, and birdwatchers may spot kestrels hovering above the dunes or hear the melodic calls of skylarks. In spring and early summer, the area is dotted with wildflowers, including rare orchids and dune pansies. The trail also skirts several small ponds and wet dune valleys, which attract amphibians and dragonflies.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
This region has a rich history tied to both coastal defense and agriculture. The dunes were once part of a natural barrier protecting the inland from the North Sea, and remnants of WWII bunkers can be found hidden among the vegetation, particularly near De Blink. These bunkers are a reminder of the Atlantic Wall, a vast system of fortifications built by the Germans during the war. Informational signs along the route provide context about these structures and the broader history of the Dutch coastline.
Navigation and Facilities
The trail is well-marked, but for precise navigation and to explore alternative routes or nearby points of interest, use HiiKER’s detailed mapping tools. There are several benches along the way for rest, and the halfway point near De Blink offers a small picnic area. Public toilets and a beach café are available at the Langevelderslag entrance, making it a convenient spot to start and finish your walk.
Access and Practical Tips
The sandy paths can be soft in places, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The area is exposed to wind, especially near the coast, so bring layers even in summer. Dogs are allowed on most sections but must be kept on a leash in nature reserves. Cyclists share some paths, so stay alert at junctions.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful dune landscapes, with a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and echoes of history just a short journey from the urban centers of the Randstad.
