Out and Back
“Stroll between sea and dunes, where coastal history meets wildflowers, seabirds, and the magic of salty air.”
Starting from the elegant Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin in Noordwijk, this coastal walk covers approximately 7 km (about 4.3 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for all fitness levels. The trail begins at the boulevard, easily reached by bus from Leiden Centraal station—bus 20 or 21 will drop you at Noordwijk’s “Vuurtorenplein” stop, just steps from the hotel. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the “Parking Noordwijk aan Zee” garage, a short walk from the trailhead.
Coastal Dunes and North Sea Views The route heads north along the wide, sandy beach, with the North Sea’s waves on your left and the rolling dunes on your right. The first kilometer (0.6 miles) offers panoramic sea views and the chance to spot seabirds such as gulls, terns, and the occasional cormorant. The beach is broad and flat, ideal for a relaxed stroll or a brisk walk, depending on your pace.
Recreatiegebied Strand Katwijk After about 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you’ll reach the recreational area of Strand Katwijk. This stretch is popular with locals for kite flying, beach sports, and picnics. The dunes here are protected, home to hardy grasses and wildflowers in spring and summer. Keep an eye out for rabbits darting through the undergrowth and, if you’re lucky, the rare sand lizard basking on a sunny patch.
Historical Significance This coastline has a rich history, with the dunes once forming part of the Atlantic Wall during World War II. Remnants of bunkers can still be found hidden among the dunes, silent witnesses to the area’s strategic importance. Katwijk itself is an ancient fishing village, and the trail passes close to the old lighthouse, a white tower that has guided ships since the early 17th century.
Navigation and Facilities The route is straightforward, following the coastline and marked dune paths. For precise navigation and to explore alternative routes or nearby points of interest, use HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. Public restrooms and beach cafés are available at both Noordwijk and Katwijk, especially during the summer season.
Return Options and Wildlife At the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark, you’ll arrive near the Katwijk Boulevard, where you can relax at a beachside café or catch a bus back to Leiden or Noordwijk. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons, with species such as oystercatchers, plovers, and even the occasional peregrine falcon.
This easy, scenic walk is perfect for those seeking a blend of natural beauty, coastal history, and the invigorating sea air of the Dutch North Sea coast.
