Loop
“Wander through a vibrant tapestry of blooming fields, historic estates, and tranquil Dutch countryside charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Noordwijkerhout, this 16 km (about 10 miles) loop trail offers a flat and leisurely journey through the heart of South Holland’s famed bulb-growing region. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s an ideal route for walkers of all abilities, including families and those seeking a relaxed day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near Langevelderweg, just a short distance from the entrance to the Langeveld dunes and the edge of the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen nature reserve.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Noordwijkerhout is accessible via bus from Leiden or Haarlem, with stops at Langevelderweg or nearby Zilkerduinweg providing easy access to the trailhead. If driving, parking is available at the Langevelderweg car park, close to the intersection with Loosterweg Noord, making it simple to start and finish your loop without backtracking.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop follows a combination of paved fietspaden (cycle paths) and quiet rural roads, weaving through agricultural fields, flower bulb farms, and patches of woodland. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and route tracking, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints for this trail.
Highlights Along the Trail
*Bulb Fields and Agricultural Heritage* From March to May, the landscape bursts into color as tulip, hyacinth, and daffodil fields bloom in neat rows. The region’s bulb-growing tradition dates back to the 17th century, and you’ll pass several historic farms and greenhouses that have been cultivating flowers for generations. Even outside the blooming season, the patchwork of fields and canals offers a quintessential Dutch countryside experience.
*Langeveld Dunes and Waterleidingduinen* At around 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, the route skirts the edge of the Langeveld dunes, a protected area known for its sandy trails, pine forests, and abundant wildlife. Look out for deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, especially in the quieter early morning hours. The nearby Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, visible from parts of the route, is one of the Netherlands’ oldest water catchment areas, supplying drinking water to Amsterdam since the 19th century.
*Loosterweg Noord and Historic Estates* As you turn onto Loosterweg Noord, the trail passes several stately homes and estates, some dating back to the 18th century. These properties, often surrounded by manicured gardens and old trees, reflect the prosperity brought to the region by the flower trade. At approximately 10 km (6 miles), you’ll find the entrance to the Keukenhof estate, world-famous for its spring flower displays, though the gardens themselves require a separate ticket to enter.
Nature and Wildlife
The flat, open landscape is home to hares, pheasants, and a variety of waterfowl along the canals. In spring and summer, swallows and storks are common sights overhead. The mix of farmland, woodland, and dune habitats supports a surprising diversity of flora and fauna, making this loop a rewarding walk for nature enthusiasts.
Trail Conditions and Facilities
The entire route is paved or well-maintained, suitable for walking, cycling, and even strollers. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the dunes and at small roadside cafes in De Zilk and Noordwijkerhout. Public toilets are available at the start and in the village centers.
Planning Tips
Weather in this region can be changeable, so bring a light rain jacket and sun protection. The trail is exposed in places, with little shade outside the woodland sections. Spring weekends can be busy due to flower tourism, so consider a weekday visit for a quieter experience. Dogs are welcome on leash, but check local signage for any seasonal restrictions in nature reserves.
