Loop
“Stroll beneath ancient oaks and across sunlit heath, where wildflowers, history, and quiet beauty intertwine.”
Nestled in the tranquil countryside south of Groningen, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop hike through Noordlaarderbos and Vijftig Bunder offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for all levels of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Noordlaren, with the closest significant landmark being the Noordlaren Church (Kerk Noordlaren), a recognizable starting point for navigation.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Groningen Central Station, then transfer to a regional bus (such as Qbuzz line 51 or 58) toward Zuidlaren or Annen, alighting at the Noordlaren bus stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead near the church. Drivers can park in the small lot adjacent to the church or along Kerkstraat, where parking is generally available and free.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route follows a well-marked circuit via Pollse Weg, Duin Weg, and Westerse Weg, weaving through ancient woodland and open heath. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and real-time tracking, use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed mapping and waypoints for this specific trail.
Woodland and Heath: Flora, Fauna, and Landmarks
The Noordlaarderbos is a mature deciduous forest, home to towering oaks, beeches, and birches. In spring and early summer, the forest floor bursts with wildflowers and ferns, while autumn brings a spectacular display of mushrooms and changing leaves. The area is rich in birdlife—listen for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional tawny owl. Roe deer and foxes are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail transitions into the Vijftig Bunder, a patchwork of heathland and open meadows. This section is particularly notable for its sandy soils and scattered juniper bushes, remnants of the region’s glacial past. The heath is managed to preserve rare plant species and is a haven for butterflies and dragonflies in summer.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
Noordlaarderbos and its surroundings have a deep-rooted history. The area was shaped by glacial activity during the last Ice Age, leaving behind undulating terrain and sandy ridges. Along the route, you may notice ancient burial mounds (hunebedden) and remnants of WWII-era bunkers, silent witnesses to the region’s layered past. The nearby Noordlaren Church, dating back to the 13th century, is one of the oldest in the province and worth a brief detour before or after your hike.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The paths are mostly wide, well-maintained, and suitable for walking year-round, though sections can become muddy after heavy rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, but hiking boots are not strictly necessary. There are no significant climbs or descents, and the total elevation gain is negligible—less than 5 metres (16 feet) over the entire loop.
There are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Benches are scattered along the route, offering peaceful spots to rest and enjoy the scenery. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, especially in areas where livestock graze.
Planning Your Visit
The hike can be completed in 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace, allowing time to pause for wildlife observation or photography. The trail is popular with locals but rarely crowded, especially on weekdays. For navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, consult HiiKER before setting out.
