Loop
“Stroll beneath ancient oaks and across blooming heath, where whispers of history meet vibrant wildlife.”
Starting from the edge of Noordlaren, a small village in the province of Groningen, the Noordlaarder Bosch and Vijftig Bunder Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance to the Noordlaarderbos, just off the Noordlaarderbosweg, which is easily reached by car or by taking a bus to Noordlaren from Groningen city center.
Getting There For those arriving by public transport, buses from Groningen’s main station run regularly to Noordlaren, with a stop at Noordlaarderbosweg providing direct access to the forest entrance. Drivers can park at the small lot near the forest entrance on Noordlaarderbosweg, which is well signposted from the village center.
Trail Experience and Navigation The loop meanders through the ancient Noordlaarderbos, a mixed deciduous woodland known for its tranquil atmosphere and rich biodiversity. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, suitable for families, casual walkers, and those seeking a peaceful nature escape. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and to explore side trails, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance.
Natural Highlights As you progress through the forest, you’ll encounter towering oaks and beeches, with the forest floor carpeted in spring by wildflowers and ferns. The area is a haven for birdlife—listen for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional tawny owl. Deer and foxes are sometimes spotted in the quieter sections, especially near dawn or dusk.
Vijftig Bunder Heathland About halfway through the loop, the trail opens onto the Vijftig Bunder, a stretch of heathland that contrasts beautifully with the dense woodland. This open area is dotted with juniper bushes and offers expansive views, especially striking in late summer when the heather blooms purple. The heathland is an important habitat for reptiles and butterflies, and interpretive signs along the path provide information about the unique flora and fauna.
Historical Significance Noordlaarderbos is steeped in history, with traces of ancient burial mounds dating back to the Bronze Age. These low, grassy mounds are visible from the trail and are protected archaeological sites. The forest itself was once part of a much larger woodland that covered the region, and remnants of old boundary ditches and medieval field systems can still be seen in places.
Practical Tips The entire loop is about 6 km (3.7 miles) with negligible elevation change, making it ideal for a leisurely walk of 1.5 to 2 hours. The paths can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are no facilities along the route, so bring water and snacks. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife.
For those interested in extending their walk, several connecting trails lead deeper into the Drentsche Aa National Landscape, all easily navigable with HiiKER. The Noordlaarder Bosch and Vijftig Bunder Loop is a serene introduction to the natural and historical richness of northern Netherlands, perfect for a relaxed day outdoors.
