Loop
“Wander through tranquil forests and blooming heath, where history and nature mingle in gentle, colourful harmony.”
Starting from the outskirts of Eindhoven, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop offers a gentle introduction to the rolling woodlands and open heath of North Brabant, with an elevation gain of around 100 metres (328 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the Berg Weg Haarte, close to the leafy suburb of Waalre, making it accessible by both public transport and car. For those arriving by train, Eindhoven Centraal is the nearest major station; from there, local buses head towards Waalre, with stops within walking distance of the trailhead. Drivers will find parking options near the Berg Weg Haarte entrance, adjacent to the forest edge.
Woodland and Heathland Landscapes
The route quickly immerses you in the Pouliebos, a tranquil woodland known for its tall pines and scattered birch. Early in the hike, listen for woodpeckers and keep an eye out for roe deer, which are often spotted in the quieter glades. The undergrowth here is rich with ferns and moss, especially in spring and autumn when the forest floor is at its most vibrant.
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail transitions into the Kleine Koningsbelt, a low ridge that offers subtle but noticeable elevation changes. This section is characterized by sandy soil and open patches of heath, where heather blooms in late summer, painting the landscape in shades of purple. The ridge provides occasional glimpses through the trees towards the surrounding farmland and, on clear days, distant church spires.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
The region around Waalre and Eindhoven has a long history of settlement, with traces of ancient field systems and boundary stones occasionally visible along the route. The area was once part of a strategic corridor during World War II, and while the trail itself is peaceful today, local information boards sometimes highlight these historical connections.
Navigation and Wayfinding
Waymarking is generally good, but the network of intersecting paths can be confusing, especially in the denser sections of Pouliebos. For reliable navigation, use HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and GPS guidance. This is especially useful if you plan to explore side trails or want to ensure you stay on the main loop.
Wildlife and Seasonal Interest
Birdlife is abundant throughout the year, with nuthatches, jays, and the occasional buzzard overhead. In spring, wildflowers line the path edges, while autumn brings a flush of mushrooms and toadstools. The heathland sections are particularly atmospheric in early morning or late afternoon, when mist lingers and the light filters through the trees.
Facilities and Practical Tips
There are no major facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Benches are scattered at intervals, often at scenic viewpoints or crossroads. The terrain is mostly flat and well-maintained, suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for families or those seeking a relaxed day out. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when sandy sections can become slippery.
The loop returns to the starting point near Berg Weg Haarte, making it easy to catch a bus back to Eindhoven or return to your parked car. This accessible and varied route is a great way to experience the natural and historical richness of the Eindhoven region.
