Loop
“Amid blooming heather and ancient boulders, the trail unveils tranquil woodlands and whispers of history.”
Starting from the edge of Nijverdal, the trailhead for this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop is conveniently located near the Paltheweg, just a short walk from the Nijverdal train station. For those arriving by public transport, trains from major cities like Zwolle and Enschede stop at Nijverdal, and local buses also serve the area. If driving, parking is available near the Paltheweg or at the nearby visitor center of Nationaal Park Sallandse Heuvelrug.
Trail Overview and Navigation
This easy, mostly flat route (with virtually no elevation gain) winds through the scenic landscapes of Noetselerberg and Heuversveld, two of the most tranquil sections of the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence and route details, HiiKER provides reliable navigation and up-to-date trail information.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The path quickly immerses you in a patchwork of heathlands, pine forests, and open sandy stretches. In late summer, the heather blooms in vibrant purple, attracting bees and butterflies. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for the rare black grouse, a species that finds refuge in these heathlands, as well as woodlarks and tree pipits. Roe deer are often spotted at dawn or dusk, and the forest edges are alive with the calls of woodpeckers.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass close to the Noetselerberg, a gentle rise that offers sweeping views over the heath. This area is dotted with glacial erratics—large boulders left behind by retreating ice sheets during the last Ice Age. The trail then meanders through the Heuversveld, a quieter, less-trodden section where the landscape transitions from open heath to denser woodland.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Sallandse Heuvelrug region has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. The Paltheweg itself is named after the Palthe family, local landowners who played a significant role in the area’s agricultural development. During World War II, the surrounding forests provided cover for resistance fighters, and remnants of old bunkers and shelters can still be found if you look closely off the main path.
Practical Information
The trail is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, with well-maintained paths that are accessible year-round. There are no steep climbs, making it ideal for families or those seeking a leisurely walk. Rest benches are placed at intervals, and the route passes several picnic spots. There are no refreshment facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash due to the presence of wildlife and grazing sheep.
For navigation, trail updates, and offline maps, HiiKER is recommended to ensure you stay on track and make the most of your hike through this peaceful corner of Overijssel.
