Westkanaalpad, Maasbandijk and Weurtse Grindgat

This is a long, almost perfectly flat river-and-canal circuit of roughly 58 km / 36 miles with essentially 0 m / 0 ft of climbing—ideal for steady pacing, but the distance makes it an endurance day. You’ll be walking a mix of dike-top paths, canal-side multi-use tracks, and floodplain trails around Nijmegen/Weurt and the Land van Maas en Waal, with big skies, wide water, and lots of birdlife.

A practical start point that matches the “Westkanaalpad” context is by the northern end of the Maas–Waal Canal at Weurt, near Sluis Weurt (Weurt Lock) and the canal mouth where it meets the Waal. Another easy-to-find nearby landmark used for access is Dorpsstraat 99, 6544 AC Nijmegen (by the canal corridor), which works well as a “navigate-to” point if you want to begin on the Nijmegen side and step onto the canal path quickly.

Getting to the start (car + public transport)

• By car: Aim for Weurt (near Sluis Weurt) or the Dorpsstraat area (6544 AC Nijmegen) and use local parking where permitted along residential streets or signed lots. Arrive early—popular river walks can fill up on fair-weather weekends.
• By public transport: The Nijmegen region is well-served by rail and buses. A common approach is to travel to Nijmegen (main station), then take a bus toward Weurt/Beuningen and walk the last stretch to the canal/lock area. Check the latest bus routing and any diversions, then load the full track into HiiKER so you can confidently connect the final streets to the towpath.

What the terrain feels like (and why it’s “easy” but still serious)

• Underfoot: Mostly paved or hard-packed surfaces on dikes and canal paths, with some narrower, sandier floodplain sections near the Grindgat and river beaches. After rain, the low floodplain trails can hold water and turn slick.
• Exposure: Expect wind—dikes and open water offer little shelter. Sun can be intense in summer because shade is limited.
• Wayfinding: The corridor is generally straightforward (water on one side is your handrail), but the floodplain network can braid into multiple informal tracks. Keep HiiKER handy for the correct line, especially where paths pinch between water bodies or detour around grazing areas.

The route flow and key sections (approximate distances)

0–13 km (0–8 miles): Westkanaalpad along the Maas–Waal Canal You’ll settle into a rhythm on the canal-side path—flat, linear, and efficient. This canal is historically significant: the Maas–Waal Canal was built 1920–1927 and officially opened on 27 October 1927, creating a major shortcut between the Maas (Meuse) and the Waal and dramatically reducing shipping detours. Walking here, you’ll see why it mattered: straight water, engineered banks, bridges, and the steady movement of inland vessels.

What to look for: - Working waterway infrastructure (locks/bridges) and long sightlines. - Waterfowl and gulls using the canal as a corridor, especially in cooler months.

13–25 km (8–15.5 miles): Transition toward Maasbandijk (dike walking in the Land van Maas en Waal) As you leave the canal corridor and angle into the Maas-side dike landscape, the feel changes from industrial-waterway to classic Dutch river country: dike crests, fields, side channels, and farm access lanes. “Maasbandijk” is a dike road name used in this region; one concrete reference point along it is Maasbandijk, 6606 KE (near Niftrik, Gelderland)—useful if you’re splitting the day into navigational “targets” in HiiKER.

What to look for: - Dike geometry: the higher, safer line above the floodplain. - Seasonal mud on field-edge connectors; stay on the dike where possible if conditions are wet.
