“A long, flat Veluwe wander through heath and pine-oak hush, where sand tests stamina.”
This is a long, flat Veluwe loop through a classic mosaic of heath, pine-and-oak woodland, sandy tracks, and quiet agricultural edges—built for steady pacing rather than climbing. At ~50 km / ~31 mi with roughly ~0 m / ~0 ft of ascent, the main challenges are distance, surface variety (soft sand can be energy-sapping), and staying on the right forest lanes where everything can look similar.
A practical, reliable “hike head” area for this loop is the Putten–Garderen side of the Veluwe, near Landgoed Schovenhorst (Garderenseweg 93, 3881 GK Putten, Netherlands)—a well-known estate with parking and clear access into the surrounding woods and heaths. (botanischetuinen.nl)
From there, the loop naturally links toward the Kruishaarsche Heide, across the Huinerveld area, and onward toward the historic Boeschoten estates (Groot/Klein Boeschoten) before returning through forest and heath corridors.
By car
- Navigate to Landgoed Schovenhorst, Garderenseweg 93, 3881 GK Putten. This is a prominent access point on the road between Putten and Garderen, with a dedicated parking area. (botanischetuinen.nl)
- Arrive early on weekends: this is a popular walking area, and parking fills quickly on fair-weather days.
By public transport - The nearest rail hub is typically Putten (town). From Putten you’ll usually need a bus and/or taxi to reach the Garderenseweg/Schovenhorst area efficiently. Because bus routes and timetables change, check the day-of connections before you commit. - If you prefer to keep navigation simple once you arrive, load the route into HiiKER and use it to confirm the correct trailheads and forest junctions as you transition from town edges into the Veluwe’s track network.
Even with minimal elevation change, this loop is not “easy” in the casual sense—50 km / 31 mi is an all-day outing for most hikers. Expect: - Wide forest roads (fast, forgiving underfoot) - Narrower singletrack through heath edges - Sandy stretches on older drift/sand tracks (slower, higher calf/ankle load) - Occasional paved connectors near farms or estate lanes
Plan for 8–12+ hours depending on pace, breaks, and how much sand you hit.
0–10 km / 0–6 mi: Estate woods and the first heath openings
Leaving the Schovenhorst area, you’ll move through managed woodland with long straight lanes and occasional clearings. This part is ideal for settling into rhythm and checking that your footwear and pack sit comfortably. In drier periods, the surface is firm; after rain, some low spots can hold water.
10–22 km / 6–14 mi: Kruishaarsche Heide—open sky, wet heath pockets, and vennen
The Kruishaarsche Heide is known as part of a chain of wet heath habitats in this region, where restoration and connectivity between heath parcels is a recurring management theme. (bestuivers.nl)
Here you’ll notice:
- More exposed walking (wind and sun matter)
- Heathland vegetation with seasonal color shifts
- Wet depressions/vennen (small heath pools) that can bring muddy margins and slick boardwalk/edge footing in places
Wildlife is often most active at the heath–forest boundary: keep an eye out for deer movement at dawn/dusk, and listen for woodland birds in the shelter belts.
22–35 km / 14–22 mi: Huinerveld and the “quiet archaeology” of the Veluwe
