Loop
“Meandering past historic farmhouses and blooming streams, this gentle Gelderland loop invites tranquil countryside discovery.”
Starting from the outskirts of Barneveld, this 14 km (about 8.7 miles) loop trail offers a gentle walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all experience levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Barneveldseweg and Oude Barneveldseweg, just outside the village of Terschuur, which is easily reached by local bus from Barneveld station or by car with parking available near the Kruishaarderberg area.
Getting There and Trail Access
Travelers arriving by public transport can take a train to Barneveld Centrum, then transfer to a local bus heading toward Terschuur. The bus stop at Terschuur, Kerk, is a short walk from the trailhead. For those driving, follow the N301 and look for parking options near the Kruishaarderberg, a small wooded rise that marks the start of the route.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route follows quiet country lanes and farm tracks, weaving through the open landscapes of Gelderland. The terrain is predominantly flat, with well-maintained paths suitable for walking year-round. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and route tracking, HiiKER provides a detailed map and GPS guidance for this trail.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Kruishaarderberg: Although not a mountain, this gentle rise is a notable feature in the otherwise flat landscape. The area is dotted with small woodlands and hedgerows, providing habitat for local birdlife such as woodpeckers and finches. - Historic Farmlands: Much of the route passes through agricultural land that has been cultivated for centuries. Traditional Dutch farmhouses and barns, some dating back to the 19th century, can be seen along the way. - Barneveldse Beek: The trail crosses this small stream, which is lined with willows and often attracts herons and ducks. In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom along the banks. - Oude Barneveldse Weg: This old road has historical significance as a former trade route connecting Barneveld with neighboring villages. Remnants of cobblestone paving and old milestones can still be spotted.
Nature and Wildlife
The open fields and hedgerows are home to hares, pheasants, and a variety of songbirds. In the early morning or late afternoon, deer are sometimes seen grazing at the edges of the woods. The area is also known for its population of tawny owls, which can be heard at dusk.
Facilities and Preparation
There are limited facilities directly on the trail, so hikers should bring water and snacks. The village of Terschuur offers a few cafés and shops for refreshments before or after the hike. The flat terrain and well-marked paths make this route suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed countryside walk. Weather can be changeable, so waterproof clothing is recommended outside of summer months.
