“A big-sky Grevelingenmeer loop of sea dikes and Delta Works drama—flat, wind-bared, and all-day.”
This is a big, flat, water-shaped loop around the Grevelingenmeer—about 78 km / 48.5 mi with essentially 0 m / 0 ft of climbing. Expect long stretches on sea dikes (zeedijken), asphalt cycle paths, and hard-packed service roads with constant exposure to wind and very little natural shade. Even though the effort is rated “Easy” by elevation, the distance and weather exposure make it a full-day endurance walk for most hikers.
A practical start point that matches common routing for this loop is near Peuterdijk 2, 3249 AW Herkingen (Herkingen, Goeree-Overflakkee)—right by the village edge and close to the water/dike network that leads you toward the Grevelingen. (fietsknoop.nl)
From Herkingen you’ll quickly settle into the defining rhythm of the day: straight horizons, big skies, and water on one side for hours at a time. The “Oud Herkingse Zeedijk” portion is classic Delta-country walking—broad, engineered flood defenses with a firm surface and wide views. The landscape is open and agricultural inland, with the Grevelingen’s saltwater edge and mudflats/saltmarsh character appearing where the shoreline shallows.
A useful way to plan the day is in four long legs (distances are approximate and depend on the exact line you follow around the lake):
Leg 1: Herkingen → toward Bruinisse / Grevelingendam side: ~18–22 km / 11–14 mi
You’ll be on dikes and quiet roads/cycleways with frequent water views. This is often the calmest-feeling part early in the day—until the wind picks up.
Leg 2: Crossing the Grevelingendam area: ~6–10 km / 4–6 mi
This is a more “infrastructure” feeling segment: long, linear, exposed, and very open. The Grevelingendam is a major Delta Works dam connecting Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland and includes navigation/sluice works near Bruinisse. (en.wikipedia.org)
Leg 3: Schouwen-Duiveland shoreline (dikes, inlets, villages): ~25–30 km / 16–19 mi
Expect a repeating pattern of dike-top walking, occasional sheltered stretches behind vegetation, and then open water again. Surfaces are mostly paved or very firm. This is where monotony can creep in—plan breaks deliberately.
Leg 4: Back toward Brouwersdam / Ouddorp side → return toward Herkingen: ~18–22 km / 11–14 mi
The western side near the Brouwersdam feels more coastal and “big water.” The Brouwersdam (another Delta Works structure) was built 1962–1971, closing off the former sea inlet and helping create the Grevelingenmeer as it exists today. (en.wikipedia.org)
The Grevelingen is not just “a lake”—it’s a human-shaped saltwater system created by the Delta Works after the 1953 North Sea flood disaster, with dams and sluices controlling exchange with the sea and water levels. (en.wikipedia.org)
