Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of shimmering wetlands, wildflower meadows, and bird-filled skies near Amsterdam.”
Nestled just southeast of Amsterdam, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop through the Naardermeer and Bovenmeent nature reserves offers a tranquil, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Naardermeer Visitor Centre (Bezoekerscentrum Natuurmonumenten Naardermeer), which is easily reached by car or public transport. From Amsterdam Centraal, take a train to Naarden-Bussum station, then a short bus ride or cycle to the visitor centre.
Getting Started and Navigation
The loop begins at the visitor centre, where you’ll find parking, toilets, and information boards. For navigation, HiiKER provides a detailed map of the route, ensuring you stay on track through the wetlands and meadows.
Wetlands, Birdlife, and Observation Points
The Naardermeer is the oldest nature reserve in the Netherlands, protected since 1906. The area is renowned for its extensive reed beds, open water, and willow thickets. Early in the hike, you’ll follow a well-marked path along the edge of the lake, with panoramic views over the water. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach the Vogelkijkscherm, a birdwatching hide. Bring binoculars—this is a prime spot for observing spoonbills, herons, and the iconic purple heron, especially in spring and summer.
Historic Landscape and Meadows
Continuing along the loop, the trail meanders through the Bovenmeent polder, a classic Dutch landscape of low-lying meadows and drainage ditches. This area was reclaimed from the lake centuries ago, and the straight lines of the ditches reflect the hand of human engineering. At around 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll pass the Wijde of Bovenste Blik, a wide water channel that once played a role in local peat extraction and transport.
Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal Highlights
The meadows are rich with wildflowers in late spring and summer, attracting butterflies and dragonflies. Watch for grazing cattle and horses, which help maintain the open landscape. The reserve is also home to otters and a variety of amphibians, though these are more elusive.
Practical Considerations
The entire route is flat, with well-maintained paths suitable for walking shoes or lightweight boots. Some sections may be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. Dogs are not allowed in much of the reserve to protect wildlife. There are benches and picnic spots along the way, but no refreshment stops, so bring water and snacks. The loop returns you to the visitor centre, where you can learn more about the area’s history and conservation efforts.
