Loop
“Wander through emerald meadows, shimmering lakes, and whispering woods, where wildlife and history quietly entwine.”
Starting from the outskirts of Hilversum, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) loop trail offers a flat and leisurely walk through some of the most scenic and ecologically significant landscapes in North Holland. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s accessible to hikers of all levels and is especially suitable for those looking for a relaxed day out immersed in nature.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near Hilversumse Bovenmeent, just east of Hilversum. For those arriving by public transport, Hilversum railway station is well-connected to Amsterdam and Utrecht, with frequent trains running throughout the day. From the station, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the Bovenmeent area. If driving, parking is available near the Bovenmeent residential area, close to the start of the trail.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route forms a broad loop, taking you through the Hilversumse Bovenmeent, skirting the edges of the Naardermeer nature reserve, and circling the tranquil waters of the Grote Meer. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and signposts at key junctions. For precise route guidance and up-to-date trail conditions, HiiKER is recommended as your primary navigation tool.
Highlights and Points of Interest
*Hilversumse Bovenmeent and Wetlands*
The first section leads you through the Bovenmeent, a green buffer zone with open meadows and reed beds. This area is known for its birdlife, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species pass through. Keep an eye out for herons, grebes, and the occasional marsh harrier gliding over the reeds.
*Naardermeer Nature Reserve*
At around 5 km (3.1 miles), you’ll enter the Naardermeer, the oldest nature reserve in the Netherlands, established in 1906. This peat lake and surrounding wetlands are a haven for biodiversity. The reserve is famous for its population of purple herons and otters, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a kingfisher darting along the water’s edge. The area is also rich in plant life, with rare orchids and water lilies blooming in late spring and early summer.
*Grote Meer and Surrounding Forests*
The loop continues around the serene Grote Meer, a large lake fringed by woodland and marsh. This is a peaceful spot for a rest or picnic, with benches and viewpoints offering panoramic vistas over the water. The surrounding forests are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. In autumn, the woodlands are particularly beautiful as the leaves turn golden and the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and mushrooms.
Historical Significance
The Naardermeer holds a special place in Dutch conservation history. In the early 20th century, it was saved from being drained for landfill by a group of nature lovers, marking the beginning of the Dutch nature conservation movement. Today, it stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to preserving its unique wetland habitats.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire route is flat, with well-maintained gravel and dirt paths. After heavy rain, some sections near the wetlands can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is advisable. There are several access points to the reserve, but some areas may be restricted during the breeding season to protect wildlife—check HiiKER for any seasonal closures or detours.
Facilities and Refreshments
There are limited facilities along the route, so bring enough water and snacks for the day. In the village of Naarden, a short detour from the trail, you’ll find cafés and shops if you need to restock or enjoy a meal. Public toilets are available at the main entrances to the Naardermeer reserve.
Wildlife and Nature Watching
Binoculars are highly recommended for birdwatching, especially in the Naardermeer. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times for wildlife sightings. Please respect the reserve’s rules by staying on marked paths and keeping noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing the animals.
This loop offers a unique opportunity to experience the tranquil beauty and rich biodiversity of North Holland’s wetlands, all within easy reach of Amsterdam and Utrecht.
