Point-to-Point
“Stroll from charming Weesp to historic Muiden, where endless skies meet wildflowers, waterbirds, and storied dikes.”
Starting from the edge of Weesp, a charming town just southeast of Amsterdam, this 22 km (about 13.7 miles) route offers a flat, easy walk through the heart of North Holland’s reclaimed landscapes. The trailhead is conveniently located near Weesp railway station, making it accessible by frequent trains from Amsterdam Centraal (about 15 minutes) or by car, with parking available near the station.
Through the Bloemendalerpolder and Along Historic Dikes
The first stretch leads you through the Bloemendalerpolder, a classic Dutch polder landscape characterized by wide, open fields, grazing cattle, and a network of drainage ditches. The land here sits at or just below sea level, a testament to centuries of Dutch water management. Early on, you’ll notice the absence of elevation gain—this entire hike is essentially flat, with a total ascent of 0 meters (0 feet), making it suitable for all fitness levels.
After about 4 km (2.5 miles), the route joins the Diemerzeedijk, a historic sea dike that once protected Amsterdam from the Zuiderzee’s tides. The dike itself is a living monument to Dutch engineering, and you’ll see remnants of old sluices and pumping stations along the way. Keep an eye out for waterfowl, as the wetlands here attract herons, grebes, and migratory birds, especially in spring and autumn.
Crossing the Zuiderzeeweg and Urban-Nature Interface
At roughly the halfway point, the trail crosses the Zuiderzeeweg, a major road that marks the transition from rural polder to the urban edge of Amsterdam. This section offers a unique juxtaposition: on one side, the city’s skyline; on the other, the tranquil waters of the IJmeer and reed-fringed banks. The path skirts the Diemerpark, a reclaimed landfill now transformed into a haven for wildflowers, butterflies, and rabbits. The park’s open meadows and wooded patches are ideal for a lunch break.
Final Stretch to Oosterpoel
Continuing east, the route follows the water’s edge, passing marinas and small beaches popular with locals in summer. The final kilometers wind through the Oosterpoel area, a quiet, green expanse on the outskirts of Muiden. Here, you’ll find the historic Muiderslot Castle just a short detour away—a 13th-century fortress that once guarded the mouth of the Vecht River. The hike ends near the Oosterpoel nature reserve, where reed beds and willow thickets provide habitat for songbirds and, occasionally, roe deer.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. Public transport options are excellent: start at Weesp station and finish near Muiden, where buses connect back to Amsterdam or Weesp. If driving, consider parking at Weesp and returning by public transport from Muiden.
Expect mostly paved or gravel paths, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited between Weesp and Muiden, though there are cafes in both towns. The flat terrain and open vistas make this hike enjoyable year-round, but bring windproof clothing, as the polder can be breezy even on mild days.
