Point-to-Point
“From Monnickendam to Edam, stroll past wildflowers, waterbirds, and windmills for a storybook Dutch escape.”
Starting from the charming town of Monnickendam, this 14 km (about 8.7 miles) route to Edam via the Gouwzee is a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Monnickendam bus station, which is easily reached from Amsterdam Centraal by direct bus in under 30 minutes. For those arriving by car, parking is available in Monnickendam’s town center, close to the harbor.
Setting Out from Monnickendam
Begin your journey in Monnickendam, a historic fishing town known for its picturesque canals, 17th-century architecture, and the iconic Speeltoren (Carillon Tower). As you leave the town, the route quickly immerses you in the serene Dutch polder landscape, with expansive views over green meadows and grazing livestock. The Gouwzee, a shallow bay of the Markermeer, will be your constant companion on the left, offering opportunities to spot waterfowl such as grebes, herons, and swans.
Along the Gouwzee Shoreline
The path hugs the dike along the Gouwzee for much of the route, providing unobstructed views across the water to Marken and the distant skyline of Amsterdam on clear days. The dike is well-maintained and suitable for both walkers and cyclists, with benches placed at intervals for rest and birdwatching. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the dike, and the air is filled with the calls of lapwings and terns.
Passing Through Katwoude
At around 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll pass through the tiny village of Katwoude, famous for its traditional cheese farms. Many of these farms welcome visitors for tastings and demonstrations, making this a perfect spot for a short break. The area is also dotted with windmills, some of which are still operational and used for water management.
Approaching Edam
The final stretch leads you through tranquil countryside, with the dike separating the Gouwzee from lush pastures. As you approach Edam, the landscape transitions to the historic heart of this renowned cheese town. Edam’s old center is a delight to explore, with cobbled streets, drawbridges, and the famous Edam Cheese Market square. The Grote Kerk (Great Church) and the Edam Museum are notable landmarks worth visiting.
Navigation and Safety
The route is straightforward and well-signposted, but for precise navigation and to discover points of interest along the way, use HiiKER’s detailed trail maps. The entire walk is exposed, so bring sun protection and windproof clothing, especially outside summer months. There are several cafes and shops in both Monnickendam and Edam, but limited facilities along the dike, so carry water and snacks.
Getting Back
Edam is well-connected by bus to Amsterdam and other regional centers, with the main bus stop located near the cheese market square. Buses run frequently, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue exploring the region.
This route offers a blend of Dutch history, scenic water views, and rural tranquility, making it an ideal day hike for those seeking a gentle adventure through North Holland’s iconic landscapes.
