Loop
“Wander through timeless estates, wildflower meadows, and storybook villages on this gentle Dutch countryside loop.”
Starting from the picturesque grounds near Borg Ewsum, a historic estate in Middelstum, Groningen, this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) loop hike offers a gentle journey through the heart of the Dutch countryside, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a relaxed day outdoors. The route weaves together the Oude Kerkpad, Doorderpad, and Toptilsterpad, each offering its own unique charm and glimpses into the region’s rich history.
Getting There
The trailhead is easily accessible from the village of Middelstum. For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Groningen and transfer to a regional bus (such as Qbuzz line 61) toward Middelstum; alight at the “Middelstum, Centrum” stop, which is a short walk from Borg Ewsum. Drivers can park at the Borg Ewsum estate, which has a small parking area for visitors.
Historic and Cultural Highlights
Borg Ewsum itself is a highlight, with its origins dating back to the 14th century. The estate features a restored borg (manor house), moat, and gardens, and is a testament to the region’s feudal past. As you set out, you’ll pass through the estate’s grounds, where you can admire the historic architecture and perhaps stop for a coffee at the onsite tea house.
Countryside and Village Scenery
The route quickly leads you into the open Groninger landscape, characterized by wide fields, drainage ditches, and the occasional windmill. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the well-marked paths are suitable for all fitness levels. Along the Oude Kerkpad, you’ll skirt the edges of Middelstum, passing by the medieval church of St. Hippolytus, a striking brick structure with a tower visible for miles around.
Nature and Wildlife
Keep an eye out for local wildlife, especially waterfowl such as herons, ducks, and geese that frequent the waterways. In spring and summer, the meadows are alive with wildflowers and butterflies. The Doorderpad section takes you through quieter, more rural stretches, where you may spot hares darting across the fields or hear the calls of lapwings overhead.
Navigational Tips
The trail is well signposted, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress. The app provides up-to-date maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track, especially at junctions where multiple footpaths intersect.
Points of Interest and Amenities
At approximately 8 km (5 miles), you’ll reach the village of Toornwerd, a charming hamlet with traditional farmhouses and a small, centuries-old church. This is a good spot for a rest or picnic. The final stretch along the Toptilsterpad brings you back toward Middelstum, passing through tranquil farmland and offering expansive views of the Groninger countryside.
There are limited facilities along the route, so bring enough water and snacks for the day. Public toilets and refreshments are available at Borg Ewsum at the start and end of your hike.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for walkers interested in history, rural landscapes, and the quiet beauty of northern Netherlands.
