Point-to-Point
“From Middelburg’s lively streets to Zoutelande’s wind-sculpted dunes, a breezy polder-to-sea wander.”
Starting near Middelburg city center (use Middelburg Station as the most practical landmark for meeting, transit, and last-minute supplies), this easy point-to-point walk runs west across Walcheren’s open polder landscape to the North Sea dunes, finishing around Zoutelande (a convenient end landmark is Zoutelande village / beach access points along the seafront). Expect roughly 12 km (7.5 mi) with essentially 0 m (0 ft) of sustained climbing—any “ups and downs” are short dune undulations and sea dike ramps rather than true elevation gain.
0–3 km (0–1.9 mi): Middelburg edges into farmland
You’ll leave the denser streets quickly and transition to quieter lanes and paths. Surfaces are typically firm—pavement, compacted gravel, and well-maintained farm tracks—so trail shoes are fine, but road-walk comfort matters. This section is exposed in places; wind off the North Sea can be noticeable even before you reach the coast.
3–8 km (1.9–5.0 mi): Walcheren polders and village edges (Koudekerke area)
The route trends through classic Zeeland polder scenery: straight drainage ditches, wide skies, and fields divided by hedgerows and narrow canals. You’ll pass near Koudekerke, a village that sits between Middelburg and the dunes. This middle stretch is flat and steady—ideal for a relaxed pace—but it can feel surprisingly breezy with little shelter.
Wildlife here is often subtle rather than dramatic: look for marsh and meadow birds along ditches (herons, egrets, and small waders depending on season), and listen for songbirds in hedgerows. In wetter months, expect muddy edges where farm traffic meets footpaths; waterproof footwear helps after rain.
8–12 km (5.0–7.5 mi): Kaapduinen and the coastal finish toward Zoutelande (Groot Valkenisse area)
As you approach Kaapduinen and the dune belt, the landscape changes quickly: sandier paths, dune grasses, and more pronounced (but still short) rises and dips. The “climbs” here are brief—think a few meters at a time—yet they can feel like more effort if you’re walking into a headwind.
Near Groot Valkenisse, you’re in one of the most scenic parts of Walcheren’s coast: dunes, sea views, and the sense of walking along a natural barrier that has shaped Zeeland’s history. Keep an eye out for rabbits and dune-adapted birds; in quieter moments you may spot raptors riding the wind. Stay on marked paths to protect fragile dune vegetation and to avoid unstable sand faces.
