Point-to-Point
“Wander through blossoming orchards and riverside villages, where Dutch history and nature quietly intertwine.”
Starting near the village of Maurik in the heart of the Dutch Betuwe region, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) point-to-point walk to Beusichem follows a section of the Betuwepad, a long-distance trail renowned for its tranquil river landscapes and fruit orchards. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is accessible to most walkers and is ideal for those seeking a leisurely day out in the countryside.
Getting There Maurik is easily reached by public transport: take a train to Tiel, then a local bus (such as line 44) to Maurik, alighting near the village center. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Maurik marina, close to the address Veerweg 1, 4021 EE Maurik. The trailhead is a short walk from here.
Scenery and Landmarks The route quickly immerses you in the Betuwe’s signature scenery—vast orchards, especially vibrant in spring when apple and pear trees are in blossom. The trail meanders along the southern bank of the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine), offering wide views across the river and over the flat, fertile floodplains. At around 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll pass near the historic Maurik ferry crossing, a centuries-old point of passage that still connects the north and south banks.
Historic Villages and River Dikes At about 5 km (3.1 miles), the path skirts the edge of the village of Ravenswaaij, a small settlement with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. The dike here is typical of the region, built to protect the low-lying land from river floods. Keep an eye out for traditional Dutch farmhouses and the occasional stork’s nest perched atop utility poles.
Nature and Wildlife The Betuwe is famous for its birdlife, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species stop over in the wetlands. You may spot herons, geese, and the occasional kingfisher along the riverbanks. The meadows and orchards are also home to hares and roe deer, particularly in the quieter stretches between Ravenswaaij and Beusichem.
Approaching Beusichem The final 4 km (2.5 miles) lead you through more orchards and past the occasional windmill, before entering the outskirts of Beusichem. The trail ends near the village center, close to the historic St. Johannes de Doperkerk church, a landmark dating back to the 13th century.
Navigation and Facilities Waymarking along the Betuwepad is generally clear, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. Both Maurik and Beusichem offer cafés and small shops for refreshments at the start and end of your walk.
Public transport from Beusichem is straightforward: buses connect to Culemborg railway station, providing easy onward travel. This gentle walk through the Betuwe’s orchards and riverscapes is a classic Dutch countryside experience, rich in both natural beauty and local history.
