Point-to-Point
“Wander through blossoming orchards, riverside meadows, and historic dike villages, where Dutch heritage and nature entwine.”
Starting from the charming village of Maurik, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) route follows the scenic Rijnbandijk and Marsdijk, tracing the southern banks of the Nederrijn river with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near Maurik’s central area, close to the intersection of Rijnbandijk and Burgemeester Houtkoperweg, which is easily reached by local bus from Tiel or by car with parking available in the village.
Getting There Maurik is accessible by public transport, with regular buses connecting from Tiel railway station. If arriving by car, follow signs to Maurik from the N320, and park in the village center, where several free parking lots are available near the main square.
Trail Experience and Navigation The route follows the Rijnbandijk, a historic dike that has protected the Betuwe region from flooding for centuries. The dike itself is a testament to Dutch water management, with panoramic views over the river and the lush floodplains. Hikers will pass through a patchwork of orchards, meadows, and small hamlets, with the river always close by. The path is mostly paved or hard-packed gravel, making it suitable for all weather conditions. For navigation, the entire route can be followed using the HiiKER app, which provides detailed mapping and waypoints.
Landmarks and Points of Interest At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), the trail passes the historic ferry crossing at Eck en Wiel, a spot where ferries have operated since medieval times. Continuing along the dike, you’ll encounter several traditional Dutch windmills and farmhouses, many dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Around the halfway mark, near the village of Kesteren, the route briefly leaves the dike to follow the Marsdijk, a quieter rural lane lined with poplar trees and offering views of the distant Utrechtse Heuvelrug hills.
Nature and Wildlife The floodplains along the Nederrijn are a haven for birdlife, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species pass through. Expect to see herons, storks, and flocks of geese grazing in the meadows. The orchards in the Betuwe are famous for their apple and cherry blossoms in April and May, creating a spectacular display. Roe deer and hares are also commonly spotted in the fields.
Historical Significance This region has a rich history, with the dikes and waterways playing a crucial role in the development of the Dutch landscape. The villages along the route, such as Opheusden, were significant during World War II, particularly during Operation Market Garden, and memorials can be found commemorating these events.
Finishing the Hike The trail concludes in Opheusden, near the intersection of Marsdijk and Stationsweg, close to the Opheusden railway station. From here, trains run regularly to Tiel and Arnhem, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue your journey elsewhere.
This easy, flat hike is ideal for those seeking a peaceful walk through quintessential Dutch countryside, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy local history, wildlife, and the ever-present river views.
