Loop
“Stroll through Nijmegen’s leafy embrace, where Roman echoes and woodland wonders weave a tapestry of tranquility.”
Starting from the edge of Nijmegen, near the well-known Goffertpark, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through a landscape rich in both history and natural beauty. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s accessible for hikers of all abilities, including families and those looking for a relaxed stroll.
Getting There
The trailhead is easily reached by public transport: take a train or bus to Nijmegen Central Station, then transfer to a local bus heading toward Goffertpark. From the park, it’s a short walk south to the start of the loop, near the intersection of Muntweg and Hatertseweg. For those arriving by car, parking is available at Goffertpark or along nearby residential streets.
Historical Highlights
One of the most intriguing features of this loop is the reconstructed Romeinse Wachttoren (Roman Watchtower), located about 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike. This wooden tower stands as a reminder of the Roman Empire’s northern frontier, where soldiers once kept watch over the surrounding forests and trade routes. Informational panels at the site provide insight into the region’s Roman past and the strategic importance of this area along the ancient Limes Germanicus.
Nature and Wildlife
The trail soon enters Heumensoord, a sprawling woodland known for its tranquil atmosphere and diverse habitats. In spring and summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers, while autumn brings a spectacular display of changing leaves. Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. The sandy paths and occasional open clearings make this a pleasant walk year-round.
Trail Navigation and Facilities
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and check your progress. There are several benches along the way, especially near the watchtower and in Heumensoord, offering spots to rest and enjoy the scenery. While there are no cafés or shops directly on the trail, Goffertpark and the surrounding neighborhoods have plenty of options for refreshments before or after your hike.
Points of Interest Along the Route
- At approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles), the path skirts the edge of open heathland, a rare habitat in the Netherlands, where you might spot grazing sheep or Highland cattle used for landscape management. - Around 4 km (2.5 miles), the trail passes a series of small ponds, attracting frogs, dragonflies, and waterfowl. - The final stretch leads back through mature beech and oak woods, with occasional glimpses of the city skyline through the trees.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a blend of history, nature, and accessibility, all within easy reach of Nijmegen’s urban amenities.
