Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows, tranquil wetlands, and timeless river views on this peaceful Dutch loop.”
Starting near the tranquil village of Denekamp in the Dutch province of Overijssel, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located close to the Oelemars nature reserve, a well-known birdwatching spot and wetland area just northeast of Denekamp, near the German border.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Denekamp is accessible via bus from Oldenzaal, which is connected to the Dutch rail network. From Denekamp’s center, it’s a short walk or bike ride to the Oelemars reserve, where the loop begins. If driving, parking is available at the Oelemars visitor area, signposted from the main road (Ootmarsumsedijk).
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop follows well-marked, mostly unpaved paths that wind through a patchwork of meadows, reed beds, and small woodlands. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and up-to-date route information, HiiKER is recommended as your digital companion.
Nature and Wildlife
Oelemars is renowned for its rich birdlife, especially during migration seasons. Expect to see grebes, herons, and sometimes rare species like the black tern. The wetlands are also home to amphibians and a variety of dragonflies in summer. The route skirts the edge of the Oelemars lake, offering panoramic views across the water and into Germany. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the paths, and the meadows are alive with butterflies.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the walk, you’ll pass the Oelemars birdwatching tower, a wooden structure providing elevated views over the reserve—bring binoculars for the best experience. Continuing north, the trail briefly parallels the Dinkel River, a slow-moving waterway that has shaped the landscape for centuries. The riverbanks are dotted with willows and old farmsteads, some dating back to the 19th century.
Historical Significance
The region of Dinkelland has a long history of cross-border trade and cultural exchange, given its proximity to Germany. The Oelemars area itself was once a peat-cutting site, and remnants of this history can be seen in the landscape’s low-lying, waterlogged character. Informational signs along the route provide insights into the area’s transformation from industrial use to a protected nature reserve.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The terrain is flat and easy, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed outing. Paths can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is advisable. There are benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the birdwatching tower and at the halfway point by the Dinkel River.
Facilities and Safety
There are basic facilities at the Oelemars visitor area, including toilets and information boards. The route is well-frequented but never crowded, offering a peaceful experience. Mobile signal is generally good, and the area is safe, though it’s wise to carry water and snacks as there are no shops directly on the trail.
