Loop
“Wander through shifting sands, tranquil ponds, and blooming heath in this kaleidoscope of Brabant landscapes.”
Starting from the edge of Loon op Zand, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop hike offers a gentle, flat journey through the varied landscapes of the Kraanvensche, Roestelberg, and Land van Kleef areas, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy, scenic walk. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance to National Park De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, close to Roestelberg, a well-known local restaurant and landmark (Roestelbergseweg 2, 5171 RL Kaatsheuvel).
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, buses from Tilburg or 's-Hertogenbosch stop at Kaatsheuvel, from where it’s a short taxi or bike ride to the trailhead. If driving, parking is available at the Roestelberg parking lot, which is well signposted from the main road.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop is well-marked and easy to follow, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use the HiiKER app, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. The route is suitable for all fitness levels, including families and casual walkers.
Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The hike begins by skirting the edge of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park, known as the “Brabant Sahara” for its vast sand dunes and heathlands. Early on, you’ll traverse open sandy stretches interspersed with patches of pine and oak forest. The Kraanvensche section is notable for its tranquil wetlands and small ponds, which attract a variety of birdlife, especially in spring and autumn. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional roe deer in the quieter forested areas.
Roestelberg and Land van Kleef
Midway through the loop, the trail passes near the Roestelberg, a sandy hill that offers panoramic views over the surrounding dunes and heath. This is a great spot for a rest or picnic, with benches and a small café nearby. Continuing into the Land van Kleef, the landscape shifts to a mix of open heath, birch groves, and small agricultural fields. This area is rich in wildflowers during late spring and summer, and the sandy paths are bordered by blooming heather in August.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The region has a long history of human settlement, with traces of ancient sand drifts and medieval land use still visible in the landscape. The Land van Kleef was once part of a feudal estate, and remnants of old boundary markers can sometimes be spotted along the trail. The nearby village of Loon op Zand is known for its historic castle and traditional Brabant architecture, making it worth a short detour if time allows.
Practical Tips
The entire route is exposed in places, so bring sun protection and plenty of water, especially in summer. The sandy sections can be challenging for strollers or bikes, but the majority of the path is firm and well-maintained. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain nature reserve sections. Restrooms and refreshments are available at the Roestelberg restaurant, roughly halfway through the loop.
For a seamless hiking experience, download the full route and waypoints from HiiKER before setting out. This ensures you stay on track and don’t miss any of the area’s highlights.
