Loop
“Wander through a vibrant tapestry of blooming heather, ancient woods, and whispers of Bronze Age mysteries.”
Nestled in the heart of the Veluwe, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop with a gentle elevation gain of 100 metres (328 feet) offers a tranquil escape through some of the Netherlands’ most enchanting heathland and forest. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Loenermark car park, just outside the village of Loenen, which is easily accessible by car via the A50 motorway. For those using public transport, take a train to Apeldoorn and then a bus to Loenen; from there, it’s a short walk to the starting point.
Getting Started and Navigation
The loop begins at the Loenermark car park, a well-known access point for the Veluwe’s extensive trail network. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for reliable navigation, as the area features a web of intersecting paths. The route is well-marked, but a digital map will help you stay on track, especially at junctions where multiple trails converge.
Heathland and Forests
The first section leads you through open heathland, especially striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. This landscape is dotted with juniper bushes and solitary pines, providing habitat for roe deer and a variety of bird species, including the rare nightjar. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail transitions into mixed woodland, where ancient oaks and beeches create a shaded canopy. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and, if you’re lucky, wild boar tracks in the sandy soil.
Het Keizand and Loenermark
Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you’ll reach Het Keizand, an area of shifting sands and open clearings. This unique landscape is a reminder of the Veluwe’s glacial past and ongoing natural processes. The sandy stretches can be challenging after rain, but they offer excellent opportunities for spotting lizards basking in the sun. The Loenermark itself is a nature reserve known for its tranquility and the presence of grazing sheep, which help maintain the heathland ecosystem.
Heidensklep and Historical Significance
At approximately 6 km (3.7 miles), the trail passes near the Heidensklep, a mysterious burial mound dating back to the Bronze Age. This ancient tumulus is one of several in the region, reflecting the area’s long history of human settlement. Interpretive signs provide insight into the mound’s significance and the prehistoric peoples who once inhabited these lands.
Final Stretch and Practical Tips
The last section of the loop gently descends back toward the starting point, passing through a mix of heath and woodland. The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle inclines, making it suitable for families and less experienced hikers. There are several benches along the route for rest and picnics, and the open areas offer panoramic views of the Veluwe’s rolling landscape.
Be sure to bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities directly on the trail. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife. The trail is accessible year-round, though sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when sandy sections can become slippery.
For navigation, HiiKER provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable hike through one of Gelderland’s most scenic and historically rich landscapes.
