Loop
“Wander through a vibrant patchwork of heather, fens, and forest, where nature and history intertwine.”
Starting from the edge of Lierop, a small village in North Brabant, the trailhead for this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) loop is easily accessed near the parking area at the Lieropseweg, close to the entrance of the Lieropsche Heide nature reserve. For those arriving by public transport, take the train to Helmond or Eindhoven, then transfer to a local bus toward Lierop; from the village center, it’s a short walk to the reserve entrance. Drivers can park at the designated lot on Lieropseweg, which is well signposted.
Landscape and Terrain
This route is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain—less than a meter (about 3 feet) over the entire distance—making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. The path meanders through the Lieropsche Heide, a mosaic of heathland, pine forest, and open sand drifts. Early in the hike, you’ll skirt the tranquil waters of ’t Heerenven, a shallow fen surrounded by reeds and birch trees. The trail then leads south and east, weaving through stretches of purple heather in late summer and passing scattered Scots pine groves.
Nature and Wildlife
The Lieropsche Heide is a haven for birdlife. Look for the flash of a great spotted woodpecker or listen for the melodic call of the skylark overhead. In the wetter areas near Beuven—the largest fen in the Netherlands—you might spot herons, grebes, and, if you’re lucky, the rare black-necked grebe. The open heath is home to sand lizards and, in spring, the air is alive with butterflies and dragonflies. Deer tracks are common in the sandy soil, especially in the quieter early morning hours.
Significant Landmarks and Points of Interest
At roughly 4 km (2.5 miles), the path reaches the shores of Beuven. This expansive fen is a highlight of the hike, with several benches and bird hides offering opportunities to pause and observe the wildlife. The area around Beuven is protected, so stick to the marked trails to avoid disturbing sensitive habitats. Continuing west, the route passes through a patchwork of heath and forest, with occasional glimpses of grazing sheep—part of ongoing conservation efforts to maintain the open landscape.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Lieropsche Heide has a long history of human use, from prehistoric settlements to medieval peat cutting. The fens, including ’t Heerenven and Beuven, were once vital sources of peat for local communities. Remnants of old peat extraction ditches are still visible in places, especially near the water’s edge. The heathland itself is a product of centuries of grazing and burning, a landscape shaped by both nature and people.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The route is well-marked with colored posts, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for extra confidence, especially where side trails intersect. Paths are mostly sandy or grassy, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are advisable, but the terrain is gentle and suitable for families.
Facilities and Practical Tips
There are no cafes or shops directly on the trail, so bring enough water and snacks for the day. Picnic tables are scattered along the route, particularly near Beuven. Toilets are available at the main parking area on Lieropseweg. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife.
This easy, scenic loop through the Lieropsche Heide offers a peaceful escape into one of Brabant’s most beautiful heathland reserves, rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
