Loop
“Wander through whispering pines, golden dunes, and hidden ponds on this serene South Holland loop.”
Nestled in the heart of South Holland, the Treekerduinen and Vogewater Loop offers a gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible adventure for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the entrance to Landgoed Den Treek-Henschoten, a well-known estate just outside Leusden, easily reached by car via the N226 or by public transport with buses from Amersfoort Central Station stopping at the nearby Treekerweg.
Getting Started and Navigation
The loop begins at the main parking area on Treekerweg, a recognizable spot adjacent to the estate’s forest edge. For those arriving by public transport, the bus stop “Leusden, Treekerweg” is a short walk from the trailhead. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions, as the route weaves through a patchwork of sandy dunes, pine forests, and open heathland.
Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The first section of the loop leads you into the Treekerduinen, a unique inland dune landscape shaped by centuries of wind and grazing. The sandy paths are bordered by Scots pine, oak, and birch, with occasional clearings where heather blooms in late summer. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the terrain opens up to reveal expansive heathlands, a haven for butterflies and ground-nesting birds such as the woodlark and nightjar.
Continuing west, the trail skirts the Vogewater, a tranquil pond surrounded by reeds and willow. This area is a hotspot for birdwatchers, especially in spring and autumn when migratory species pass through. Look for herons, kingfishers, and the elusive grass snake basking near the water’s edge.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The estate of Den Treek-Henschoten, through which much of the loop passes, dates back to the 14th century and remains one of the largest privately owned nature reserves in the Netherlands. The landscape bears traces of its agricultural past, with old boundary ditches and remnants of heathland farming visible along the route. At approximately 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll pass close to the historic Treekerpunt, a former shepherd’s hut now serving as an information point about the estate’s history and conservation efforts.
Practical Tips and Wildlife Awareness
The entire loop is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a leisurely walk. Paths can be sandy and occasionally muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in sensitive wildlife areas, especially during the bird breeding season from March to July.
Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The nearest café and restrooms are at the estate’s main entrance, about 500 metres (0.3 miles) from the parking area. Cyclists and horseback riders also use some sections of the trail, so remain aware of shared paths.
For navigation, trail updates, and offline maps, HiiKER is the recommended tool to ensure a smooth and enjoyable hike through this tranquil Dutch landscape.
