Loop
“Stroll past ancient castles and wildflower meadows on a peaceful, bird-filled loop through Dutch countryside.”
Starting from the outskirts of Barneveld, this gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) loop hike offers a flat, accessible route with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for beginners, families, or anyone seeking a leisurely walk through the Dutch countryside. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Stoutenburg, just east of Amersfoort, and is easily accessible by both car and public transport. If arriving by train, take a local bus from Amersfoort Centraal Station towards Barneveld and alight at the Stoutenburg stop, which is a short walk from the starting point. For drivers, parking is available near Kasteel Stoutenburg, a recognizable landmark and the perfect place to begin your journey.
Historic Kasteel Stoutenburg and Surroundings
The route quickly immerses you in the rich history of the Gelderland region. Kasteel Stoutenburg, dating back to the 13th century, stands as a testament to the area’s medieval past. The castle, now a nature and environmental education center, is surrounded by ancient moats and lush parkland. Take a moment to explore the grounds and admire the stately architecture before heading out along the Barneveldsche Beek, a meandering stream that has shaped the landscape for centuries.
Nature and Wildlife Along the Barneveldsche Beek
Following the banks of the Barneveldsche Beek, the trail winds through a patchwork of meadows, reed beds, and small woodlands. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for herons, kingfishers, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the path, attracting butterflies and bees. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make for easy walking, and the open countryside provides sweeping views across the Gelderse Vallei.
De Schammer Nature Reserve
At roughly the halfway point, the route enters De Schammer, a restored wetland and grassland reserve. This section is particularly rich in biodiversity, with grazing cattle and sheep helping to maintain the landscape. Boardwalks and observation points allow for close-up views of marshland habitats, where you might spot frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl. Interpretive signs provide information about the area’s ecological importance and ongoing conservation efforts.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check for any recent updates or detours. Paths are mostly gravel or compacted earth, suitable for walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. There are no significant climbs or descents, and the total elevation gain is negligible—less than 10 feet (3 meters) over the entire loop.
Facilities and Practical Tips
Restrooms and refreshments are available at Kasteel Stoutenburg, and there are several picnic spots along the way, especially near De Schammer. The trail is open year-round, but waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain, as some sections near the stream can become muddy. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with grazing livestock.
This easy, scenic hike offers a blend of history, nature, and tranquility, making it a rewarding outing for all ages and abilities.
