Loop
“A breezy, near-town loop where poplar rooms, reed-edged waters, and clearings feel quietly wild.”
You’ll be walking a flat, lowland loop through Hollandse Hout on the edge of Lelystad, where young-to-mature woodland, reed-fringed water, and open clearings create a surprisingly “wild” feel for such an easy, near-town hike. Expect around 13 km (8.1 mi) with ~0 m (0 ft) of climbing—any effort comes more from distance, wind, and softer path sections than from elevation.
Because “near” wasn’t fully specified, the most practical, well-known access points for this loop-length walk are the main visitor hubs on the Hollandse Hout / Oostvaardersplassen edge:
By car (most straightforward):
By public transport:
If you’re building the exact 13 km (8.1 mi) loop in HiiKER, choose one of the trailheads above and adjust the loop to your preferred distance by adding/removing short spurs along the wider forest tracks.
This is classic Flevoland walking: level ground, long straight stretches, and a mix of: - Wide compacted paths through poplar and mixed woodland - Narrower, sometimes softer tracks near wetter sections (after rain, expect mud patches and puddling) - Occasional paved or hard-packed connectors near access roads and the forest edge
Because there’s essentially no climbing, pacing is easy—many hikers underestimate how much wind can add effort in open sections, especially near the polder edges and water.
Hollandse Hout sits right beside the internationally important Oostvaardersplassen wetland complex, part of Nationaal Park Nieuw Land. (nationaalparknieuwland.nl) The setting is shaped by Flevoland’s reclaimed-land history: the broader polder was created in the late 20th century, and the reserve became famous for large-scale nature development and rewilding discussions. (en.wikipedia.org)
In the woods themselves, you’ll notice that parts of Hollandse Hout were planted with fast-growing species like poplar, willow, and alder, while other sections include slower-growing broadleaf trees such as oak and beech, creating distinct “rooms” of forest character as you loop around. (visitlelystad.nl)
Wildlife highlights commonly associated with this area include:
- Birdlife: woodland and edge species, plus raptors overhead where the canopy breaks
- Mammals and reptiles: the area is known for species such as pine marten and grass snake (non-venomous), and the broader Hollandse Hout/Oostvaardersplassen edge is managed to support rich biodiversity. (visitlelystad.nl)
- Wet-nature development: management projects have created/expanded wetter habitat features (including a water channel/“slenk”) intended to benefit species like dragonflies, kingfisher, reed birds, and also European beaver and grass snake in suitable zones. (staatsbosbeheer.nl)
You’ll get the best wildlife viewing by moving quietly through the transitions—where dense woodland opens to rides, clearings, and water margins. Early morning and late afternoon tend to be most active; midday can be quieter, especially on breezy days.
