Loop
“Stroll where Roman legions once marched, surrounded by wildflowers, wetlands, and vibrant flocks of birds.”
Starting from the edge of Leidschendam, near the Vogelplas Starrevaart nature reserve, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop follows a section of the historic Romeinse Limespad, tracing the ancient Roman frontier that once marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is ideal for walkers of all abilities, including families and those seeking a leisurely day outdoors.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the Vogelplas Starrevaart, just off the Starrevaartweg, close to the N447 road. For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Den Haag Centraal or Leiden Centraal, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 45 or 46) toward Leidschendam or Voorschoten, alighting at the Vlietland or Starrevaart stop. Drivers can park at the Vogelplas Starrevaart parking area, which is well-signposted and offers ample space.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route is well-marked and follows a combination of paved and gravel paths, making it accessible year-round. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracks, ensuring you stay on course as you traverse the scenic Dutch polder landscape.
Nature and Wildlife
The Vogelplas Starrevaart is renowned for its rich birdlife, especially during migration seasons. Expect to see large flocks of geese, ducks, and waders, with bird hides along the route offering excellent vantage points for spotting rare species such as the Eurasian spoonbill and the black-tailed godwit. The wetlands and reed beds are also home to herons, grebes, and marsh harriers. The surrounding meadows and waterways support a variety of wildflowers and butterflies in spring and summer.
Historical Significance and Landmarks
This section of the Romeinse Limespad follows the ancient Roman Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage corridor that once protected the empire’s northern frontier. Along the way, interpretive signs detail the history of Roman forts, watchtowers, and settlements that dotted the landscape nearly two millennia ago. Near the halfway point, you’ll pass close to the Vlietland recreational area, where remnants of Roman-era infrastructure have been discovered. The route also skirts the edge of the Vliet canal, historically significant as a Roman transport route.
