Loop
“Begin your walk at a storybook castle, then wander through blooming heaths, ancient woods, and peaceful meadows.”
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, this 10 km (6.2 miles) loop offers a gentle, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near Kasteel Broekhuizen, a striking 18th-century castle set just outside Leersum, which serves as both a historical landmark and a picturesque starting point. Ample parking is available at the castle grounds, and for those arriving by public transport, buses from Utrecht Centraal or Veenendaal Centrum stop at Leersum, from where it’s a short walk to the castle.
Kasteel Broekhuizen and Surroundings
The hike begins at the grand Kasteel Broekhuizen, whose stately white façade and landscaped gardens set the tone for a walk steeped in history. The castle grounds are open to the public, and the surrounding parkland is dotted with ancient trees, ornamental ponds, and manicured lawns. Early in the walk, keep an eye out for the elegant bridges and the remnants of old estate walls, which hint at the area’s aristocratic past.
Darthuizerberg: Forests and Heathland
Heading south, the trail meanders through the Darthuizerberg, a low, forested ridge that is part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Although the elevation gain is negligible, the landscape shifts from open parkland to dense pine and beech woods, with occasional clearings of heath. In spring and summer, the heath bursts into color with wildflowers and heather, attracting butterflies and bees. Birdwatchers may spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead.
Schevichoven: Rural Charm and Wildlife
The loop continues toward Schevichoven, a tranquil hamlet surrounded by farmland and meadows. This section is particularly peaceful, with wide views across fields where deer and hares are often seen grazing at dawn and dusk. The path skirts old farmsteads and crosses small streams, with benches placed at scenic spots for a rest or picnic. The area is known for its rich biodiversity, including foxes, badgers, and a variety of songbirds.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire route is well-marked and follows a mix of gravel paths, forest tracks, and quiet country lanes. Surfaces are generally firm and suitable for walking shoes or lightweight boots. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracks, ensuring you stay on course even where the trail weaves through dense woodland or crosses open fields.
Historical and Natural Highlights
Throughout the hike, interpretive signs provide insights into the region’s history, from the medieval origins of Kasteel Broekhuizen to the agricultural traditions of Schevichoven. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug itself is a glacial ridge formed during the last Ice Age, and the varied habitats along the route reflect centuries of human influence and natural evolution.
With its blend of stately heritage, serene forests, and open countryside, this loop offers a rewarding and accessible introduction to one of the Netherlands’ most scenic regions.
